MADRID, Nov. 11 -- FC Barcelona go into the international break as leaders of the Liga Santander despite suffering a shock 4-3 defeat at home to Betis on Sunday afternoon.

Although Leo Messi returning from injury with two goals, Barca never got to grips with Betis' attacking instincts and pace on the break.

Junior Firpo and Joaquin Sanchez put Betis 2-0 ahead before halftime and although Messi's penalty got Barca right back into the game in the second half, a rare error from Ter Stegen gifted Betis a third goal.

Arturo Vidal got Barca back into the game, but Ernesto Valverde's side were reduced to 10 men immediately afterwards when Ivan Rakitic was sent off and Sergio Canales reestablished Betis' two-goal lead, before Messi netted his second of the game in injury time.

Sevilla move into second place after coming back from a goal down to beat Espanyol 2-1.

Borja Iglesias' seventh goal of the season put Espanyol in front and it looked as if they could end the weekend above their city neighbors Barca. However, a late Sevilla fightback saw Gabriel Mercado equalize in the 70th minute before Wissan ben Yedder assured the points stayed in the Sanchez Pizjuan with a last minute winning goal.

Real Madrid won 4-2 away to Celta Vigo to give Santiago Solari his fourth win from four games and to lift them to within just 4 points of Barca.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring before an own goal doubled Madrid's lead and although Hugo Mallo gave Celta hope, Sergio Ramos sealed the win from the penalty spot after a foul on Alvaro Odriozola.

Dani Ceballos, who had entered the game for the injured Casemiro, scored Madrid's fourth goal in injury time and Brais Mendez netted Celta's second in the 94th minute.

Deportivo Alaves are just a point behind Barca after fighting back from a goal down to win 2-1 at home to bottom of the table Huesca.

Moi Gomez opened the scoring in the 36th minute, only for Alaves winger, Jony to bring the home side level five minutes later and a dreadful error from Huesca defender Nelson Semedo opened the door for Ruben Soriano to score the winning goal midway through the second half.

Rayo Vallecano are still without a home win this season despite another entertaining game in their Vallecas Stadium which ended 2-2 against Villarreal as the visitors equalized with just 10 minutes left on the clock.

Saturday saw Atletico Madrid twice come back from behind to claim a 3-2 win at home to Athletic Club Bilbao, who probably deserved more from the game.

Inaki Williams opened the scoring from close range in the first half and then re-established Athletic's lead, shortly after Thomas Partey's thunderbolt had made it 1-1.

Two goals from set pieces; the second in injury time, from Rodrigo and Diego Godin, then turned the game around to give Atletico all three points in the last 10 minutes.

Saturday kicked off with a competitive 0-0 draw between Valladolid and Eibar, who had chances to win, but ended with 10 men after central defender Anaitz Arbilla was sent off for two yellow cards midway through the second half.

Dani Parejo's penalty saw Valencia win 1-0 away to Getafe to claim only their second league win of the campaign, while it ended 0-0 between Girona and Leganes.

The round of matches kicked off on Friday as Real Sociedad scored three goals late in the second half to claim a 3-1 win away to Levante.

Levante had opened the scoring thanks to central defender, Chema, but strikers from Theo Hernandez, Juanmi and Mikel Oyarzabal turned the game on its head in 10 frantic second half minutes.
