LA PAZ, Sept. 18 -- South American football governing body CONMEBOL has outlined plans to end a century-old tradition of staging the Copa America mostly in odd-numbered years.
"I want to make public a request that we made to FIFA to hold the Copa America on even-numbered years from 2020," CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez told reporters.
"The last Copa America that will be played in an odd-numbered year will be in Brazil next year," he added.
Only eight times in its 102-year history has the Copa America been played in even-numbered years. The last time it occurred was in 2016, when a centenary edition of football's oldest international continental tournament was staged in the United States.
The 2019 Copa America will be played in five Brazilian cities, starting on June 14 and ending on July 7.
Meanwhile, Dominguez said CONMEBOL was in discussions with FIFA to hold a youth or women's World Cup in Bolivia "in the near term".
