Cycling or walking to work slashes chances of heart death by a third, a major study reveals.

It found active commuters were 30 percent less likely to have a killer stroke or fatal problem with their ticker, compared with drivers.

Cambridge University, Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine examined the commuting habits of almost 360,000 Brits.

Around two in three Brits use a car to get to work, compared to just one in 12 who cycle.

Lack of exercise is now the fourth largest cause of disease and disability in Britain. Half of women and a third of men in England are damaging their health through lack of exercise.
