Thanks for your question, Liuis! 我完全理解你为什么觉得“objective”和“purpose”难以分辨。因为翻译成汉语这两个词的意思听上去很接近，一个是“目标”一个是“目的”。如果按照翻译的意思去写英文那就难免出现理解上的偏差。最好是查阅这两个词的英文定义。今天我们就针对这两个词的不同含义和具体用法来推敲、比较一下。并且通过大量的例句来体会它们的用法。

作为名词objective 的意思是目标。含义是有计划、有步骤地通过努力去实现的目标，是一种可以量化的目标。类似 goal 或 target。请听例句。

Examples

For every lesson I teach, I will set a specific objective for my students.

我每教一堂课我都为我的学生设定一个具体的目标。

A: How did your appraisal go? 你的年终鉴定怎么样？

B: Well, I achieved all my objectives set last year so my manager was happy. 我完成了去年所有的目标，所以我的老板很高兴。

请大家注意，在以上这两个句子里，你不可以用 purpose 来代替，因为purpose 的英文定义是why you do something or why something exists，既意图，目的。强调做某事的原因，即为了什么目的去做。请看例句。

Examples

The torch is rather small but it served the purpose.

虽然手电很小，倒也解决了问题。

The purpose of buying that expensive dress is to please her boyfriend.

买那件昂贵连衣裙就是为了取悦她的男朋友。

提示大家一下：以上两句话里的 purpose 是不能用 objective 来代替的。因为 objective多指要通过一定的步骤、努力去实现的目标；而 purpose 则可以指立竿见影的动机和目的，更为具体化。比如，今天这个节目的目的就是要帮助大家理解 objective 和 purpose 的区别。The purpose of this programme today is to help you understand the differences between ''objective'' and ''purpose''.

最后，我想拓宽一下，看看 objective 这个词做形容词和副词的用法。Objective做形容词的时候意思是“客观的”。做副词的时候意思是“客观地”。请看例句。

Example

I know some students are not happy with the exam results but I have marked the papers objectively. They are not allowed to write their names on their exam papers.

我知道一些学生对考试成绩不满意，但是我给分绝对客观，因为不允许学生在考卷上写名字。
