　　These days it's more important than ever to be a good neighbor. There are places where I lived in the past and where I didn't even know my neighbors' names. I am fortunate enough now to live in an area where not only do I know my neighbors but I like them.

　　Some of the reasons why it's important to be a good neighbor are simple.

　　● They may take in your mail and papers for you while you're away.

　　● They look out for your home when you're on vacation and notify(告知) you if there is something wrong.

　　● You can always borrow that cup of sugar that you need on a Sunday morning when you just don't feel like driving to the store.

　　If you have never lived next to bad neighbors, you may take the good ones for granted. It is not until you move away from your college neighbors partying all night who leave beer cans in the yard that you really appreciate the good ones who are quiet and keep the yard clean.

　　If you have elderly or sick neighbors, take a moment to see what they need. You can clean their driveways for them, or maybe they need to mail letters. These things make for wonderful neighbors and some of these neighbors may turn into lifelong friends.

　　W: No, you may not. It is for my family. But you may use the bathroom next to your bedroom on the second floor.

　　M: OK. But may I use the phone in the living room?

　　W: Yes, you may. But you are only allowed to use that phone to take calls. You should use the phone in your own bedroom when you make a call out.

　　M: May I use the telephone in my bedroom to dial up the Internet?

　　W: Yes, you may. But you should not be online for more than 10 minutes each time.

　　M: Hi, Judy. I’d like to celebrate my 18th birthday with some friends this Saturday.

　　W: Oh, really? That’s great! Eighteenth birthday! You are an adult now.

　　M: Yeah, from now on, I have to take responsibility for my actions. It’s really an important day in my life.

　　W: How do you plan to celebrate it, Mike? In a bar?

　　M: No, I plan to celebrate it in my home and invite some friends to come over.

　　M: You bet. Well, on Saturday morning, I’ll order a birthday cake. Then, I’ll go shopping in the supermarket. On that afternoon I’ll decorate my room.

　　M: I’m excited. Tomorrow my mother’s going to arrive at the San Francisco Airport. She’s coming to us for two weeks. She’s coming from Osaka, Japan. Today I’m going to clean my apartment because she’s going to stay with me. Tomorrow, I’m going to pick her up. Then, we’re going to drive to my sister’s house. We’re going to have dinner with all of our friends and family that live in the Bay Area. On Saturday, we’re going to get up late. After a late breakfast, my sister and I are going to show her the beautiful city of San Francisco. We’re going to take a cable car ride. Then, I’m going to take her to my girlfriend’s house. We want to get married next year, so I want my mother to meet her. I hope she likes her.
