Most people cannot live to 100. Those that do can hardly walk, let alone take part in any activities. A few people, however, take part in dangerous activities even though they are more than 100 years old---They keep going and going! There’s a great great grandmother who likes challenging herself although she is 101 years old this year.
Mary Hardison believes that people should always be cheerful and more importantly, take on all kinds of adventures(冒险) while they physically still can. So, instead of celebrating her 101st birthday with a boring party, she decided to go paragliding(高崖跳伞运动) ----- an idea she got from her 75-year-old son who recently took it up as a hobby.
So on her birthday, cheered on by her big family, she tied herself up together with expert instructor(专业指导者) Kevin Hintze, and jumped fearlessly from the skies near her home in Ogden, Utah. And, it was not just a simple jump either. According to Kevin Hintze, the grandmother encouraged him to turn around, as they made their way down.
This is not the first time that Mary has done something “wild” and “crazy”. For her 90th birthday she rode all the adult rides at Disneyland. And, she is not done yet ----- For her 102nd birthday she hopes to go down the 3,000 foot Alpine Slide at Utah’s Park City Mountain Resort!
Not surprisingly, this great action has made Mary Hardison very famous and also earned her a place in the Guinness World Records where she broke a 2007 record set by a 100-year-old British woman. Pretty amazing! 56. What do we know about Mary Hardison?

Americans use many expressions with the word “dog”. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for lead a different kind of life. The expression “to lead a dog’s life” describes a person who has an unhappy life.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.
Doghouse provide shelter but they can be cold and lonely in the winter. Husbands and wives use this doghouse when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might get angry at her husband for coming home late or forgetting their wedding anniversary. She might tell him that he is in the doghouse and treats him badly. However, the husband may decide that it is best to leave things alone and not create more problems. He might decide to let sleeping dogs lie.
Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs. 66. The underlined expression “work like a dog” in Paragraph 2 means ________.
A. become successful
B. have an unhappy life
C. compete for the same things
D. work very, very hard 67. If a man comes home late, his wife might say angrily, “_____________.”
A. it will rain cats and dogs
B. every dog has its day
C. you lead a dog’s life
D. you are in the doghouse 68. “Leave things untouched” has the same meaning as “__________”.
A. lead a dog’s life
B. teach an old dog new tricks
C. let sleeping dogs lie
D. make people dog-tired 69. It has been really hot these days, as _______.
A. it rains cats and dogs
B. we are having the dog days of summer
C. we’re leading a dog’s life
D. we’re in the dog’s house 70. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Expressions in American culture.
B. Some expressions with the word dog
C. A good way to learn English well
D. Dog’s influence on American culture
D
Winter weather has returned to northern areas of the world. In much of the United States, winter means the return of snow.
Snow is a form of frozen water. It contains many groups of very small ice particles (颗粒)called snow crystals(晶体). These crystals grow from water particles in cold clouds. They usually grow around a piece of dust. All snow crystals have six sides, but they grow in different shapes. The shape depends mainly on the temperature and water levels in the air. The shape of a snow crystal may change from one form to another as the crystal passes through levels of air with different temperatures. Snow contains much less water than rain. About 75 cm of snow has as much water as 2.5cm of rain.
Generally, the color of snow and ice appears white. This is because the light we see from the sun is white. Most natural materials take in some sunlight. However, when light travels from air to snow, some light is sent back, or reflected(反射). Snow crystals have many surfaces to reflect sunlight. It is this light that gives snow its white color.
Much of the water we use comes from snow. Melting(融化) snow gives water to rivers and crops. Snowfall helps to protect plants and some wild animals from the cold. Fresh snow is made largely of air which is kept among the snow crystals. Because the air has trouble moving, the movement of heat is greatly reduced. However, snow is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people in the United States every year. Many people die in traffic accidents on roads that are covered with snow or ice.
71. In the center of a snow crystal there is ______.
A. air
B. water
C. dust
D. sunlight
72. If fifteen centimeters of snow completely melts, the height of water will be ______.
A. 0.5 centimeter
B. 1centimeter
C. 1.5 centimeters
D. 15 centimeters
73. According to the text, snow looks white because _______.
A. snow is actually white
B. the ice particles are white
C. the reflection of light makes it look white
D. there is a lot of air in the snow
74. How can snow protect plants from the cold?
A. Snow gives them much heat.
B. Snow turns into water and waters them.
C. Snow makes them keep moving.
D. Snow contains air which has trouble moving.
75. What is the last paragraph of the text mainly about?
A. Snow can give water to rivers and crops.
B. Snow can help crops keep warm in winter.
C. Snow has both advantages and disadvantages.
D. Snow is the cause of the deaths of many people

In the United States, train transportation is unpopular compared with cars and airplanes. Most people like traveling by car or by air. Officials of the United States Department of Transportation made a study in 2001. The study is about how many miles Americans traveled by different means of transportation. They only studied trips longer than 50 miles. The study showed that fifty-six percent of all miles were traveled in personal vehicle. Forty-one percent were traveled in an airplane. Two percent were traveled in a bus. And less than one percent of miles were traveled in a train. Amtrak is the national provider of train transportation in the United States. In the past ten years, the number of its passengers has increased by eighteen percent. Although the number of passengers has increased, it is still very small now. In countries such as France, Germany, or Japan, more people use trains. There are several reasons why many people ________________________.
Firstly, Americans love to drive their own cars. On highways, cars can travel as fast as trains. These highways connect all major cities in America.Secondly, many travelers like to be independent. When they use their own cars they can decide when to travel. Thirdly, many buses travel between major cities. Bus travel is less costly than train travel. In a huge country like the United States, cities are far away from each other. In some cases, travel from one city to another by train may take more than a day. Airplanes can carry passengers over long distances much faster. People who do not want to spend long time traveling by train decide to fly. For these people saving time is the most important thing.

作文:
Dear ,
How are you going now? I’m sorry to hear that you feel ashamed of your figure. Here is some advice I want to give you.
To keep fit, it is necessary for you to have a healthy diet. You’d better have different foods, especially fruits and vegetables, and drink milk as often as possible. It’s not a good idea to take weight-loss pills for a slim and attractive figure. It is not worth it. Having enough sleep together with regular exercise such as walking and riding is also beneficial to your health. Besides, you should take an active part in school sports. In my opinion, it is not a good habit to spend too much time reading, watching TV or chatting on-line. Always be active and keep optimistic and don’t be discouraged (disappointed/frustrated/upset) whenever you meet with trouble.
Yours,
Li Hua
