  Reading Comprehension (30 marks)

Directions: Read the following three passages., Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B,C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.

  A

Every day we go to school and listen to the teacher, and the teacher will ask us some questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask for your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends —you are in a slightly unnatural situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. You must speak so that they can hear you —loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself.

Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you. The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease but the situation is somewhat different from that of an ordinary conversation. You must take special care that you can be heard.

  56. When you speak to the class, you should speak ________.

  A. as slowly as possible

  B. in a low voice

  C. loudly

  D. forcefully

  57. The situation in the class is _________that in your house.

  A. not very different from

  B. sometimes the same as

  C. sometimes not the same as

  D. not the same as

  58. Usually, when you speak to the class, the class is ________.

  A. noisy

  B. quiet

  C. having a rest

  D. serious

  59. If you are having a conversation with an official, the most important thing for you is____.

  A. to show your ability

  B. to be very gentle

  C. to make sure that you can be heard

  D. to put the official at ease

  60. The main idea of this passage is _______.

  A. that we should talk in different ways in different situations

  B. that we must speak loudly

  C. that we must keep silent at any time

  D. that we must talk with the class

  B

What is language for? Some people seem to think it's for practicing grammar rules and learning lists of words—the longer the lists, the better. That's wrong. Language is for the exchange of ideas and information. It's meaningless knowing all about a language if you can't use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently(流利地). They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Saw once wrote, "Foreigners often speak English too correctly.” But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They're English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, they make language. But a people can only make its own language. It can't make another people's language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn't overdo(做过头)it. They should put communication(交际)first.

  61. Language is used to ________.

   A. express oneself

  B. practice grammar rules

   C. talk with foreigners only

  D. learn lists of words

  62. The underlined word in the passage “exchange” means

  .

  A. trade

  B. change

  C. communication

  D. speech

  63. "Foreigners often speak English too correctly." This sentence means that ________.

   A. foreigners speak correct English B. foreigners speak incorrect English

   C. foreigners speak English according to the grammar rules D. foreigners never make mistakes when they speak English

  64. If too many native speakers break a rule, ________.

  A. what they use will become rightB. they are against the law

  C. they should say sorry to othersD. they will become heroes

  65. When we speak a foreign language, we should ______.

  A. speak in Chinese wayB. speak by the rulesC. speak to native speakersD. not be afraid of making mistakes

  Section B (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage, Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.

For those of us who are studying at school, the time of exams is very stressful and difficult. Some people find exam times so bad that they become ill, because they are afraid of failing; they are afraid of letting their parents and family down. If exams are really making you ill or worried, don’t hide your feelings. Talk to someone about it. Maybe you can speak to a friend or someone in your family or teachers at your place of study. If one person doesn’t help you, ask someone else.

How to get through exams? Here are some advice:

Ask a teacher or tutor about how to review your lessons, and exam skills — how to work when you are in an exam.

Take short rests during your time of work. If your mind is tired, it will not remember well.

Plan your work: study at times when you know you will work at your best.

Get enough sleep, and eat healthy food.

You need exercise to work well. Walk, run, play sport — whatever you enjoy.

Stop thinking about the future and failing.

If you feel ill, talk to someone about your worries. But don’t be too relaxed! Some stress over exams makes you work hard for them.

If it upsets you to talk to your friends about exam when it is finished, don’t do it! In fact, don’t even think about the exam you have finished. What is done is done. You cannot change what you have written!
