四、阅读理解()
阅读下列材料,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该选项标号涂黑。, pressure builds up until the plates break apart. This process causes the ground to move. It is an earthquake. In other words, earth-quakes are the shaking of the earth’s surface caused by the earth’s rocky outer layer as a result of the energy stored within the earth. The strain(扭曲) within the rocks is suddenly released.
The damage an earthquake causes depends on where it is and the time it is happening. If an unpopulated region is struck, there will be low loss of life or property. If it hits a large city, there may be many injuries and much destruction. Many of the areas at risk are largely populated now. Major earthquakes hitting those areas today could produce terrible damage. Actually, there are several million small earthquakes every year. Large earthquakes such as the 1964 Alaskan quake that measured 9.2 on the Richter scale, cause millions of dollars in damage. In the last 500 years, millions of people have been killed by earthquakes around the world — including 240,000 in the 1976 Tangshan earthquake in China.
A 60-second or less earthquake can cause devastation that continues for years after the first tremor (小震). In 1972, a series of severe earthquakes struck Managua, Nicaragua. Fifteen years later, the city still looked the way it had a week after the earthquake hit, because the country did not have the necessary money to rebuild it.
The shaking of the earth is sometimes not the greatest disaster. It is in the ensuing fires and floods that often the greatest damage occurs. In the 1906 earthquake, it was the fires caused after it that did the majority of the damage. An earthquake can also destroy dams high above a city or valleys, causing floods to sweep down and sweep away everything in their path.
54. Which of the following is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. An earthquake comes from inside the earth.
B. The earth has great energy in storage.
C. How the earth plates move.
D. How an earthquake happens.
55. Which of the following is mentioned to show that an earthquake can kill too many people?
A. The 1964 Alaskan quake.
B. The 1976 Tangshan earthquake.
C. The 1972 Managua earthquake.

56. By giving the example in Paragraph 4, the author wants to show that ______.
A. an earthquake doesn’t last long

C. people in Managua suffered too much
D. Nicaragua is still a poor country
57. The underlined word “ensuing” in the last paragraph probably means ______.
A. causing too much heat and great damage

Stephen Hawking, a world famous British physicist, will write a children’s book with his daughter. Hawking said the book will be a bit like Harry Potter, but without the magic. “It explains the wonders of the universe(宇宙),” said Hawking, while he was on a visit to Hong Kong
Hawking is probably the world's most famous scientist after Albert Einstein. He is an expert on black holes. He has put his whole life into digging into the beginning (and the end) of the universe.
“My goal is simple,” Hawking once said. “It is to completely understand the universe, why it is as it is and why it is there at all.”
Hawking has a bad illness that stops him from moving or talking. For a period of time, he had no way to communicate except by blinking(眨眼).
Now he sits on a wheelchair with a computer by his side. To communicate, he moves two fingers to control the computer's mouse. He selects his words from the screen, which are then spoken by a voice synthesizer(音响合成器).
“I have had the disease for most of my life,” Hawking once said. “Yet it has not stopped me from being successful at my work.”
Although Hawking is such a disabled man, he has made great achievements. He has received many awards and prizes for his work over the years. These includes winning the Albert Einstein Award. How to Find Yourself
Do you often feel lost?Do you think you are living somebody else’s life? If yes, discover ways to find yourself by going through the following article. _________
If you are thinking, “how to find yourself when you are lost?”, then the first thing to do is to have a rest from everything—work, personal life and all worldly things. Give time to yourself to think why you seem lost. Is it because of over work? Is it because you are not leading a life that you want to? Or is it because you are not satisfied with the people or things around you? Try to find answers to these questions to determine the cause behind your restlessness. 66 __________
For once, instead of being the way others want you to be, be yourself. Look within and find yourself in you. Think about the things that you would want to do if you didn’t have any family obligations or any money issues. Think about the kind of relationship you would want to be in, the place that you would like to stay in, the kind of lifestyle you would like to lead, if you didn’t have the society or people around you, judging all the time. If you really want to know how to find inner peace, then think, what you would want others to describe you as—an honest person? Or adventurous? Or loving, or realistic? Once you look within, you will know the answer and then try to be exactly that. 67 __________
Thinking deeply about the past, the time or situations when you were the happiest, is another way to find yourself .Think what you were doing or with whom you were, when you were the happiest. This will help you to identify things that you want to do in life that make you happy and also certain people whose company you enjoy. 68 __________
Knowing yourself and determining what you to do with your life will not come to you in a day or two. Discovering oneself is an ongoing process and it can take months or sometimes even years to truly find yourself. So, it’s important that you maintain a written record of all your feelings and thoughts, which you can go through at a later stage. Pour all your emotions and feelings about life in it and who knows may be one day going through it, you will find yourself. 69 __________
Once you have discovered what you want to do with your life, make a move for change and self improvement. Even if it means taking up small things such as dancing or painting, go ahead and do it. If you want a career change, plan and take steps so that it can take place smoothly. If you are stuck in a bad relationship and find yourself unable to mend it, break away. At the beginning, you may find yourself slightly unbalanced, but with time everything will be fine.
It is very important for you to truly find yourself, before it is too late. If you do not find yourself now, you will spend your life with somebody you do not even know, i.e. yourself.

Great Fighter Passed away
Former South Africa president Nelson Mandela passed away on Dec.5th 2013 at his home in Johannesburg because of incurable lung disease, living his life to the age of 95. The whole world was in deep sorrow to mourn him, Xinhua Net reported.
Nelson Mandela, who was a great fighter against apartheid, devoted all his life to the dream of making black and white people equal, no matter what difficulties he met with. He not only gave generous help but also offered guidance to poor black people. In 1964, he was sentenced to prison by the white government and was in prison for 27 years. But that did not destroy him. Instead, it made him stronger. He never gave up his political position to get his freedom. In the 1990s, he was released and became the father of the nation. He and his ANC fellow leaders finally set up a new equal and free South Africa successfully. In 1993, Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize and was elected the first black president of South Africa.
Such was Nelson Mandela, a great fighter of black. His death was not only a great loss to South Africa but also to the whole world. Although he has left, his soul and spirit will last forever.
