The best folk music albums of 2016, regularly updated with picks from culture editor Martin Chilton. The albums are listed purely in order in which they have been reviewed.

1 . Songs of Separation Collective : Songs of Separation

Jenny Hill has brought 10 female musicians to create songs around the issues of "separation" ---emotional, political, social. Literary influences abound, including Robert Frost. Andy Bell co-produced the album. The harmonies are gorgeous and the lyrics are thought-provoking. A good start to the year for folk music.

  2.Mortal Tides: Light in/Light out

The musicians that make up Mortal Tides are still teenagers and there is unspoilt musical enthusiasm for their debut(首次推出的)album. Lead singer Noah Bevington gels well with drummer George Brignal. Jed Bevington has a nice tone to his violin playing and Fergus Quill, on bass, helps things hum along. Miriad showcases the band's harmony3.Ciaran Algar: The Final Waltz

There are some really fine tracks on Ciaran Algar's debut solo album, especially Popcorn Behaviour and Morrisons. The fiddle player has the ability to capture a song and make it sweet. It's good to see Algar growing in musical ambition and he also plays mandolin, banjo, guitar, bouzouki and percussion---arid takes lead vocals in one of the four songs he has written.

  4.Boreas: Ahoy Hoy

Ahoy Hoy is an enchanting musical union of Scotland and Norway, featuring Lori Watson, Britt Pernille Froholm, Irene Tillung and Rachel Newton. The driving beat of the track showcases Newton's elegant playing. There is fine instrumental playing, Gaelic singing and the sheer gaiety of Happy Set.

  56. If you want to enjoy different performing styles on the same topic, you may prefer______.

  A. Songs of Separation

  B. Light in/Light out

  C. The Final Waltz

  D. Ahoy Hoy

  57. The Final Waltz is different from the others in that ______.

  A. the album features mainly one singer

  B. the players are from different countries

  C. the album includes some literary elements

  D. the album shows Ciaran Algar's harmony skills

Controlling traffic is a complex and high-cost problem in many developed countries. It becomes more difficult and costly with the ever-increasing number of cars on the roads. But scientists and students at the Center for Advanced Transportation Technology, or CATT, at the University of Maryland are working to solve this problem. They are using simulation(模拟)technologies to help the government and private businesses control and react to changing trafficForbes.com says traffic congestion(阻塞)cost Americans $124 billion in 2017. It says that number could rise to $186 billion by 2030.But scientists at the CATT laboratory are trying to reduce those costs. They are developing a system that helps traffic managers, planners, emergency workers and businesses plan react better. Michael Pack is CATT director. He says, the system is important to help emergency workers, or first responders, reach an accident area faster.

"For every one minute that a lane on the freeway is blocked, the chance of another accident occurring goes up about 3%. So, if we can get a first responder out to the scene even a minute quicker and get him to clear the accident a minute quicker, that reduces overall delays and congestion significantly.

"The CATT laboratory collects information from many sources, including roadside devices, GPS equipment and wireless phones.

About 60 students and 30 software developers observe traffic flow and manage the computer servers at all times. They also work to develop software and applications that can help traffic run more smoothly and safely. Some of them turn the information gathered into so-called "visualization". These visual representations help emergency workers better understand what is happening.

The center shares its findings with firefighters, police, transportation departments and the military. They also share information with universities and transportation companies. The technology company Google uses the data for its traffic related websites. Michael Pack says the information is then shared with anyone who wants to help traffic run more smoothly.

‘Not only do our tools tell you what's going on at the scene, like there's an accident and it's involving a tractor-trailer truck, they also tell you who was informed to get to the scene, how long it took them to get to the scene, when they arrived, how long they were there, what did they do on the scene.’

Mr. Pack says the goal is to help develop an intelligent system of road signals that will communicate with each other and with vehicles on the road.

58.The new system will do all the following EXCEPT _____ .

  A. helping to decrease the cost of controlling traffic

  B. reducing the time for emergency workers to reach accident areas

  C. making road signals and vehicles interact with each other

  D. getting information from the technology company Google

59.By saying "visualization" , the writer means _____.

  A. emergency workers can better understand software and applications

  B. emergency workers can see what is happening on the scene

  C. the gathered information is visible to whoever wants it

  D. traffic flow is under constant observation

  60. It can be seen from the passage that _____.

  A. new road signals will be installed to ensure the system works properly

  B. congestion on the freeway means more traffic accidents

  C. the system is designed mainly for emergency workers

  D. the system has already been put into use in America.

I love seeing Europeans line up in airports to applaud arriving refugees. But humanitarianism (人道主义) will not guide policy for long. We liberals need to argue from Europe’s self-interest: our continent has the need, the space and the ability to accept people.

Many European countries are gradually turning into old people’s homes. Germany, Italy, Spain and others have some of the lowest birth rates in human history. It is predicted that about one-third of their populations will be aged over 65 in 2050. Germany needs to import at least 350,000 people a year to keep its workforce stable. Suddenly, young ambitious workers are pouring into the country as if called by a genie (精灵) with a lamp. No wonder Angela Merkel, German Chancellor, has been more welcoming than David Cameron, British Prime Minister. But all over Europe, carers for old people are already in need. Norway found oil under the seabed but it would have been better off if it had discovered 50,000 nurses there instead.

Many rightwingers think we have reached our limits. This feeling is widespread. And it’s true that Western Europe is one of the most densely populated regions on earth. Indeed, density has long been Europe’s unique selling point: with so many people of different nations closely packed together, we have always traded goods and exchanged ideas fast. That’s why the scientific revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries happened here.

  $

But we have plenty more room. Many European cities aren’t dense enough. Now east Germany, north-western Spain and gorgeous mountain villages in Italy are losing people. Lots of cities have unused industrial land.

Humans inhabit a slice of the EU’s territory. Only about 2.5 percent of the EU’s land is used for housing, estimates the European Commission. By contrast, a whopping 43 percent was used for agriculture in 2009, it says. That’s too much. We could turn more land into forest or into green landscapes where people can relax and play. Making that transition is feasible because we now use agricultural land inefficiently.

Migrants often spend years locked up together in serious government-funded “migrant centers”. However, the way to learn a new country’s language, make friends and find work is to live with a local. This crisis has shown that lots of Europeans are willing to take refugees into their homes. After Iceland’s government said it could take only 50 Syrian refugees, many Icelanders came forward offering to take a far greater number into their own homes. People aren’t just sitting around waiting for government to do something.

We need migrants, and we can accommodate them. If opponents just don’t like foreigners, they should say so instead of pretending to be hardheaded pragmatists (实用主义者).

  61. Why is Angela Merkel willing to take in refugees according to the passage?

  A. Germany has already stepped into aged society.

  B. Birth rates in Germany are the lowest in history.

  C. Refugees can make up the shortage of labor in Germany.

  D. She is kind and shows sympathy for homeless people.

  62. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

  A. No other region is more densely populated than Western Europe.

  B. Density has become Europe’s most outstanding characteristic.

  C. Large quantities of unused industrial land will turn into forest.

  D. All European cities are not crowded together in great numbers.

  63. It can be inferred that _______.

  A. aging problem in Germany is the worst in Europe

  B. liberals always do something for the Europe’s benefit

  C. nurses are more badly needed than petrol in Europe

  D. Europeans have already made intelligent use of the land

  64. What is the last paragraph but one mainly about?

A.Everyone can live with migrants to help them fit in.

  B. Migrants had better not live in migrant centers.

  C. Migrants can privately be accommodated.

  D. Everyone has done their own part to help migrants.

  D

After turning onto your other side in the darkness for many times, you finally sigh and get out of bed. Frustrated, you flip on the kitchen light and pour yourself a generous glass of red wine, and then pull something from the medicine cabinet to help you sleep ---maybe narcotic painkillers(镇静剂)or sleeping pills. After all, you need to be up early for work. You need to get at least a couple hours of shut-eye.

Sound familiar? Millions of Americans are right there with you. An estimated 30 percent of adults experience symptoms of insomnia(失眠)at some point, whether it's having trouble falling or staying asleep, waking up early, or not feeling well-rested after sleeping.

In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls insufficient sleep a public health epidemic(流行病)and for good reason. Poor sleep has been linked to a broad range of health problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression and even cancer. Not getting enough sleep can also put other people in danger as sleepiness increases the risk of car accidents and costly mistakes at work, especially for those working in medical or industrial fields. More than l ,500 people a year die in car accidents caused by drowsy(欲睡的)driving, and another 40,000 people are seriously injured. Dozens of studies have found poorer productivity and shorter lifespans among those who don't get the sleep they need, leading to a worse quality of life.

Sleepless nights can also mean another kind of misery; when you are tired, you are just plain moody. Too little sleep contributes to irritability and a short temper, so it's easy to snap at your spouse, your friends, your kids or even your co-workers. Over time, relationships can become worse if your insomnia isn’t managed, and you can develop serious mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety disorder.

Taking something at night to help you fall asleep and then downing several Red Bulls during the day might seem like a logical way to combat the problem. But in fact, those substances might be making your sleeping woes worse. For example, contrary to popular belief, a nightcap doesn't help people sleep better. Alcohol can prevent you from sleeping as deeply as you need to or keep you from progressing through all the normal phases of sleep. Recovering alcoholics may also experience withdrawal symptoms that can cause insomnia and tempt(引诱)people back to use alcohol to try to get someSimilarly, narcotic painkillers, sleeping pills and other depressants can lead to dependency, making it difficult for the body to fall asleep on its own. A few drags on a marijuana joint may seem like a harmless way to relax, but as with sleeping pills, the drug can interfere with your natural sleep cycle and even cause you to wake up more frequently during the night.

After a sleepless night, it is a struggle just to stay awake and function. Some people take amphetamines or other stimulants to jump-start their days or help them concentrate. But then they struggle to wind down at night and often return to alcohol or sleeping pills to help, and these short-term solutions can quickly turn into a vicious cycle. Even though about one-third of Americans get less than seven hours of sleep each night, only about six percent of adults have a sleep disorder occurring on its own, separate from any other problem. However, many more people suffer from sleep disorders that co-occur with substance use, and each condition can continue to perpetuate the other.

If all this sounds familiar ---the roller coaster of struggling to stay awake, struggling to fall and stay asleep, and relying on substances to feel remotely normal while you're awake ---you should know that you have options available that can help. Seeking professional assistance to address unhealthy behavior and psychological patterns can help you retrain your body to get natural sleep on its own. For those healing from substance abuse(药物滥用) and mental health issues, Michael's House offers a sleep program that can help you develop healthy, regular sleep patterns again. The program can help you restore your natural rest and wake cycles, giving you back productive, enjoyable days and restful nights.

  65. The first paragraph tries to convey ______.

  A. why insomnia is so common among Americans

  B. Americans are suffering a lot from lack of sleep

  C. what a typical American sleeping pattern looks like

  D. Americans have misunderstandings of sleeping issues

  66. Why is insufficient sleep called a public health epidemic?

  A. It may result in serious mental disorders.

  B. It is leading to a poorer quality of life.

  C. It is linked to many accidents, even deaths.

  D. It can cause different kinds of health problems.

  67. According to the passage, a man who is experiencing insomnia tends to ______.

  A. lie on the bed awake until morning

  B. work throughout the whole night

  C. turn to some medicine for help

  D. go to the doctor for useful advice

  68. The underlined word "perpetuate" in the last but one paragraph means "______.

  A. take over

  B. keep up

  C. depend on

  D. make out

  A. Negative.

  B. Doubtful

  第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Feeling extreme loneliness can increase an older person's risk of premature (过早的)death by 14 percent, according to research by John Cacioppo, professor of psychology at the University of Chicago.

Cacioppo and his colleagues' work shows that the impact of loneliness on premature death is nearly as strong as the impact of disadvantaged socioeconomic status, which they found increases the chances of dying early by 19 percent. A 2010 meta-analysis showed that loneliness has twice as much impact on early death as obesity does, he said.

The researchers looked at dramatic differences in the rate of decline in physical and mental health as people aged. Cacioppo and his colleagues have examined the role of satisfying relationships on older people to develop their resilience, the ability to feel better quickly after something unpleasant, and grow from stresses in life.

The consequences for health are dramatic, as feeling isolated or separated from others can disturb sleep, elevate blood pressure, increase morning rises in the stress hormone cortisol, change the gene expression in immune cells, increase depression and lower overall subjective well-being, Cacioppo pointed out in a talk, " Rewarding Social Connections Promote Successful Aging."

Cacioppo, one of the nation's leading experts on loneliness, said older people can avoid the consequences of loneliness by staying in touch with former co-workers, taking part in family traditions, and sharing good times with family and friends ---all of which give older adults a chance to connect with others about whom they care and who care about them.

"Retiring to Florida to live in a warmer climate among strangers isn't necessarily a good idea if it means you are disconnected from the people who mean much to you," said Cacioppo. Population changes make understanding the role of loneliness and health all the more important,he explained. "People have to think about how to protect themselves from depression, low subjective well-being and early death. "Although some people are happy to be alone, most people develop from social situations in which they provide mutual support and establish a strong bond. Evolution encourages people to work together to survive and accordingly most people enjoy companionship compared to be alone.

It is not solitude (独处)or physical isolation itself, but rather the subjective sense of isolation that Cacioppo's work shows to be so destructive. Older people living alone are not necessarily lonely if they remain actively engaged in social and enjoy the company of those around them. Some aspects of aging, such as blindness and loss of hearing, however, place people at special risk of becoming isolated and lonely, he said.Passage outline Supporting details

第六部分: 书面表达(满分20分)请阅读下列文字和图表,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。When was the last time you had fun with your parents? Your parents are all busy during working days; during the weekends, you may want to hang out with them but they may have to work extra hours.

This is not uncommon. In China, both of the parents have their jobs. Most of the parents try their best to offer their children comfortable circumstances, but they seldom have time to stay with their children. Nowadays, it is not uncommon that parents spend little time accompanying their children, which may result from the demands of modern life and some other reasons.

There are many factors accounting for this phenomenon. First, in contemporary society parents are facing more stress from living and work than before, so they have to spend most of their time making money. In addition, parents today are more easily distracted by various electronic products when keeping their children company.

Take my own experience for example. Once upon a time, I got into trouble in my studies. It was my parents’ company and comfort that had a great effect on my regaining self-confidence. Plain and peaceful as it was, this experience left an unforgettable impression on me, which is of great significance to my growth.

To conclude, it’s vital for parents to spend more time with their children. However busy parents are, they should afford their time to accompany their children.

  Text 10

M: Imagine your teacher says to the class: You can each earn some extra points on your final-term exam. You get to choose whether you want 2 points or 6 points.17 But if more than 10% of the class selects 6 points, then no one gets any points. your teacher promises nobody will know your choice.

Above is my exercise in class. I'm Dylan Selterman and teach at the University of Maryland. I give this challenge to students each semester in my social psychology course.

This exercise is to make students consider how their actions affect others. I've been giving it to students since 2008, and

18only one class has successfully mastered the challenge. In all other classes, more than 10 percent chose 6 points. Students' temptation to reach for more points is very strong. Last semester after I announced the results, one student threw up her hands and said, 19"If only everyone chose 2 points, we all would have gotten the points!" But many students choose the seemingly selfish option.

In a case like this, there's a public resource that people can freely use to benefit themselves. In the classroom example it's points, but in the real world the resource can be food, water, land, electricity, etc.If everyone limits their personal use, the group will get benefits. But if too many people behave selfishly, then the group eventually suffers and everyone is left with nothing as the public resource is overspent.
