I'm a travel addict (旅游迷). I think it is very exciting to go to new places, experience different situations and see unfamiliar things. Here's what I have come up with about why travel is so fascinating.

To start with, whether we know it or not, every day is filled with anxiety about things that we don't need to worry about in the first place. Going to new places is an opportunity to escape from our everyday worries. For example, after a whole day at work, I am often physically and mentally exhausted and start to worry about things. However, the moment I get on the train or bus to my next destination (目的地) I forget all my tiredness and worries.

Next is one of the most basic concepts in travel: movement. I always take along books to read on my train trips, but in the end, only about five pages or so ever get read, because I just stare out of the window at the things whooshing by. Just the ability to move is exhilarating (令人高兴的). Movement also means that we are going to new places and seeing new things. But why is that important? Because experiencing new situations, people and ideas could help us to learn about new things and grow, especially when we don't have the burden of everyday worries. I have never gone on a trip and come back as the same person; I have always changed and grown through travel.

So take every type of trip you can, at every chance you get, and you will not only experience more of the world, but will become a happier person with a richer set of experiences.

51.The text is mainly about ________.

A.how to have a comfortable lifeB.how to become a travel addict

C.why travel is so attractiveD.how to get rich experiences

2.What does the underlined word, “exhausted”, mean in the second paragraph?

  A.Angry.

  B.Excited.C.Tired.

  D.Weak.

3.Why doesn't the author read much on train trips?

A.Because he doesn't like reading on the train.B.Because he is distracted by the scenery.

C.Because he is too busy working to read.D.Because he is too tired to read.

4.The author develops the text mainly by ________.

  A.cause and effect

  B.order in time

  C.order in space

  D.examples

BEnglish is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.

However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square,

public bathrooms have no baths in them.

And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

  55. According to the passage ______.

  A. sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things

  B. there should be egg in an eggplant

  C. pineapples are the apples on the pine tree

  D. boxing rings should be round

  56. Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?

  A. A wise man and a wise guy.

  B. Overlook and oversee.

  C. Quite a lot and quite a few.

  D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.

  57. The underlined words “wind up” in the last paragraph probably mean “______”.

  A. blow

  B. roll up

  C. get hurt D. finish

  58. Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ______.

  A. clever

  B. crazy

  C. lazy

  D. dull

  C

Why is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys?

The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences. To the Egyptians, green was a color that represented the hope and joy of spring, while for Muslims, it means heaven. Red is a symbol of good luck in many cultures. In China, children are given money in a red envelope to bring good fortune in the New Year. For many nations, blue is a symbol of protection and religious beliefs. Greek people often wear a blue necklace hoping to protect themselves against evils(灾祸).

People’s choice of colors is also influenced by their bodies' reactions (反应)toward them. Green is said to be the most restful color. It has the ability to reduce pain and relax people both mentally and physically. People who work in green environment have been found to have fewer stomach aches.

Red can cause a person’s blood pressure to rise and increase people’s appetites(食欲). Many decorators will include different shades of red in the restaurant. Similarly, many commercial websites will have a red “Buy Now” button because red is a color that easily catches a

  person’s eye.

Blue is another calming color. Unlike red, blue can cause people to lose appetite. So if you want to eat less, some suggest that eating from blue plates can help.

The next time you are deciding on what to wear or what color to decorate your room, think about the color carefully.

  59. Muslims regard green as a symbol of heaven mainly because of their_________.

  A. cultural values

  B. commercial purposes

  C. personal experiences

  D. physical reactions to the color

  60. Why will many commercial websites have a red “Buy Now” button?

  A. To relax people physically.

  B. To increase people’s appetites.

  C. To encourage people to make a purchase. D. To cause a person’s blood pressure to rise.

  61. What color might help lose weight according to the text?

  A. Red

  B. Green.

  C. Blue.

  D. Purple.

  62. Which of the following would be the most proper title for the text?

  A. Colors and Human Beings

  B. The Cultural Meaning of Color

  C. Colors and Personal Experiences

  D. The Meaning and Function of Color

  D

Michael, a manager in his midthirties, has a job with a good salary that enables him to support his wife and little daughter. When asked what he loves about his work, he responds:“I don't love anything about my work. Does anyone really love their job?”

Jon Gordon, the Wall Street Journal bestselling author, believes that everyone can and should not only love their job, but find passion, purpose and happiness in it as well.

Focus on what you “get to do” in your work instead of what you “have to do”. Realize with gratitude (感激) that you don't “have to” do anything. You “get to” go to work while so many are unemployed.

Realizing our happiness has less to do with what is outside but more with what's inside of us. The way we think and feel about work influences our happiness at work. You'll also be happier when you focus on what you are giving instead of what you are getting.

If you want to be happier, don't seek (追求) happiness. Instead, share your strengths and decide to work with passion and purpose, and happiness will find you. Research shows that people are most active when they are using their strengths for a bigger purpose beyond themselves. Every job will get dull, but purpose and passion keep it fresh.

When you focus on success, you easily compare yourself with others and will feel envious. However, when you focus on excellence (优秀),you measure yourself against your own growth. You struggle to be the best you can be. You simply focus on getting better every day and this makes work more meaningful.

63.The first paragraph mainly serves to ________.

  A.give an exampleB.show the backgroundC.draw the conclusionD.introduce the topic

.According to Jon Gordon, people should________.

A.focus on success at workB.work hard to achieve success

C.find passion and happiness in their jobsD.try to find a satisfying job

.People should be grateful that they have a job because________.

A.it brings them happinessB.many people are still jobless

C.they have the opportunity to achieve successD.they get a lot from work

.What is the main purpose of this text?

A.To tell us how to improve ourselves.B.To help people be happy at work.

C.To answer workrelated questions.D.To explain why people don't like their jobs.E

Face-to-face communication involves much more than the spoken word.In fact, we often communicate our feelings to others through our body language without realizing we are doing so. We communicate through posture, gesture and facial expression. But the eyes also play an important part in this unspoken language.William Shakespeare called the eyes "a window to the soul," and you can learn to look through that window and better understand a person's body language by reading eye movement.

Begin a conversation and ask a simple question.Watch carefully for eye movement during the response. If the person looks up, he or she is thinking or forming pictures. This is also a sign of a visual thinker.Looking up and to the left shows recalling a memory, while looking up and to the right could show imaginative construction or lying.

If the person looks down, this could be a sign of obedience or even blame.Looking down and to the left can show a person talking to themselves.Looking down and to the right can show that they are feeling strong emotion.

Looking sideways can indicate distraction or checking out a potential threat, but a sideways glance can also show anger. In addition, eyes that look side to side often show shiftiness and lying.

A glance usually indicates a desire for something.Glancing at a door could show a desire to leave the room, while a glance at a person could indicate a desire to talk to them.A glance is also used when it is forbidden to look at something.

A person who is lying to you may hold eye contact longer than normal. In addition, this person might smile with his mouth but not with his eyes.Smiling with the eyes is difficult to do if the emotion is not genuine.

Rapid blinking(眨)of the eyes can occur when a person is thinking, and this can also be another sign of lying.Again, a person who is aware of this sign might overcompensate and stare.

  67. The writer supported his argument in the first paragraph by __

  __.

  A.using a quotation

  B.defining the body language

C.telling a story of William Shakespeare

  D.making a comment on eyes

  69. Which eye movement cannot hide your feelings?

  A.Looking side to side.

  B.Blinking the eyes quickly.

  C.Smiling with the eyes.

  D.Maintaining a prolonged eyes contact.
