  请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。A

Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma(文凭) or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.

Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones.

Scientists, mechanics and barbers can take classes to improve their work skills. If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money.

Continuing education classes give more adults the chances to learn new skills. There are different classes to choose from: typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. These are only some of the classes available.

Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves.

Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evening, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.

  51. What’s the purpose for adults to continue their education?

  A. To enlarge their knowledge and learn new skills.

  B. To catch up the opportunity to get a higher degree.

  C. To learn more basic knowledge to get a diploma.

  D. To make more money by getting a high degree.

  52. Which of the following statement is TRUE?

  A. Only a few continuing education classes are offered to adults.

  B. Only those who want to get more money should go on with their education.

  C. People taking continuing education can get a good job.

  D. All the people getting continuing education can get a good job.

  53. Usually, the continuing education program is given________.

  A. only for working people

  B. in a small size and expensively

  C. only in community buildings or churches

  D. by community colleges and public schools

  B

Wugging, or web use giving, describes the act of giving to charity at no cost to the user.By using Everyclick.com, which is being added to a number of university computers across the UK, students can raise money every time they search, but it won’t cost them a penny.

Research shows that students are extremely passionate(热情) about supporting charity — 88% of full time students have used the Internet to give to charity. This age group is often the least likely to have their own income.19% of 22 to 24 year olds have short-term debts of more than £5,000.With rising personal debt levels in this age group, due to university tuition fees or personal loans and a lack of long-term savings, traditional methods of donating to charity are often not attractive or possible.

Beth Truman, a 21-year-old recent university graduate, has used Everyclick.com to donate to her chosen charity, the RSPCA, for two years and has seen the “wugging” movement grow in popularity with students.“When you’re at university you become more socially aware, but it’s sometimes hard to give to others when you have little money yourself,” says Beth.“Wugging is great for people in this age group as it allows them to use the technology on a daily basis(基础) to give to charity, without costing them a single penny.”

Wugging is perfect for people who want to be more socially aware and supportive but don’t feel they have the means to do so.Students using the web can raise money for causes they care about without costing them anything in terms of time or money, and charities get a valuable source of funding.

Everyclick.com works like any other search engine, allowing users to search for information, news and images but users can decide which of the UK’s 170,000 charities they would like to support through their clicks.Everyclick.com then makes monthly payments to every registered(注册的)charity.Launched in June 2005, Everyclick.com is now the eighth largest search engine and one of the busiest charity websites in the UK.

  54. According to the passage, “wugging” is actually ______.

  A. a website

  B. an action for charity

  C. a school organization

  D. a student movement

  55. In the case of charity, Everyclick.com ______

  A. frees students from the financial(经济方面的) worries when they give to charity.

  B. receives much money from students to make payments to registered charity.

  C. offers valuable information to students as one of the largest search engine.

  D. praises students for their money-raising at the website.

  56. What would be the best title for this passage?

  A. “Wugging”, a new popular term(术语) on the Internet.

  B. British people show strong interest in charity.

  C. More Britain charities benefit from the Internet.

  D. Students raise money for charity by “wugging”.

  C

Nobody likes home economics (家政学). But thinking back the program could help us in the fight against being overweight and chronic (慢性的) diseases today.

The home economics movement was founded on the belief that housework and food preparation were important subjects that should be studied scientifically. The first classes occurred in the agricultural and technical colleges that were built in the 1860s. When most departments of universities were not willing to accept women, home economics was a back door into higher education.

Indeed, in the early 20th century, home economics was a serious subject. When few people understood germ (微生物) theory and almost no one had heard of vitamins, home economics classes offered important information about washing hands regularly, eating fruits and vegetables and not feeding coffee to babies.

However, today we remember only the fixed ideas about home economics, forgetting the movement’s most important lessons on healthy eating and cooking. Too many Americans simply don’t know how to cook. Our diets, made up of highly processed foods made cheaply outside the home, have led to many serious health problems. In recent years, many cities and states have tried to tax junk food heavily or to forbid the use of food stamps (食品券) to buy soda. Clearly, many people are doubtful about any governmental steps to push ahead with healthy eating. But what if the government put the tools of obesity(肥胖) prevention in the hands of children themselves by teaching them how to cook?

My first experience with home economics happened 20 years ago when I was a seventh grader in a North Carolina public school. A year later, my father’s job took our family to Wales, where I attended a large school for a few months. It was the first time I had ever really cooked anything. I remember that it was fun, and with an instructor standing by, it wasn’t hard. Those lessons stuck with me when I first started cooking for my husband and myself after college and they still do. Teaching cooking in public schools can help solve some problems facing Americans today. The history of home economics shows it’s possible.

  57. Home economics______.

  A. is a subject becoming more and more popular with Americans

  B. is often used to help fight against obesity and chronic diseases

  C. once offered women as a special way to receive university education

  D. was first taught in the agricultural and technical colleges in the early 1900s

  58. The third paragraph mainly tells us______ .

  A. the importance of regular hand washing

  B. the health benefits of fruits and vegetables

  C. what home economics classes were about in the early 20th century

  D. the importance of teaching home economics in the early 20th century

  59. In the opinion of the author, how should we fight against childhood obesity?

  A. Children should be taught how to cook.

  B. A heavy tax should be put on junk food

  C. Healthy eating should be pushed ahead with at school

  D. Using food stamps to buy soda should be forbidden

  60. What does the author imply(暗示) in the last paragraph?

  A. Her family moved frequently in her childhood.

  B. Cooking classes have a far-reaching effect on her later life.

  C. To receive a better education, she went to a large school in Wales.

  D. Teaching cooking is the key to solving Americans’ health problems.

  第一节

  听下面5段对话,回答第1~5小题。

  (Text 1)

W: What’s the time by your watch?

  M: It’s eleven sharp.

W: I feel hungry now. I think it must be time for lunch.

M: You have to wait for another half hour.

  (Text 2)

W: Sharon, I know you are not really a pet. You are a friend...sort of. But I can’t let you stay out here in the cold.

M: Who are you talking with, Jane?

  (Text 3)

M: Will Dr Smith be able to see me at about 8:30 on Friday?

  W: Sorry, but he’s fully booked till 11: 30.

  M: Would 1:50 be convenient?

W: Yes, he is free then.

  (Text 4)

W: I want to go to Yellow Street.

M: Yes, Madam. It’ll take about twenty minutes.

W: The traffic seems terribly heavy. It’s unusual.

M: No, Madam. It’s about the same every day at this time.

  (Text 5)

W: This is my house. You can’t do anything against my wishes. You can’t put your feet on my chairs. You can’t stay out late at night. You can’t ask friends to dinner in the house. You must pay me at the beginning of every month but not at the end.

M: OK.I won’t do anything against your wishes.

  第二节

  听第6段材料,回答第6~8小题。

  (Text 6)

M: Hi, Rose. You’ve been looking for houses for months. Can’t you find one?

W: Well, I should be careful about choosing one. It’s a big step to buy a house. I’d rather take time now than be sorry later.

M: That’s right. There’re a lot of houses for sale near the university.

W: I’ve been there, very beautiful houses, but I prefer old but big houses. We need lots of rooms, you know. And I think I can get a better buy on an old house.

M: However, a cheap house means less modern conveniences. Why not get a new one?

W: Well, Jeff can re-modern the old one. You know, he’s so skillful. Some of the new houses now have very small rooms. I wouldn’t want to spend the rest of my life in them.

M: Aren’t you tired of keeping so many rooms clean every day?

W: Not at all. Cleaning is a pleasure for me. Oh, here comes my bus. Bye!

  听第7段材料,回答第9~11小题。

  (Text 7)

M: Hi, Jane. It’s nice to see you again. I heard that you went to the United Kingdom during the vacation.

W: Yes. I paid a visit to London and attended a summer course in English.

M: Wow. It sounds so good. How long did you stay there?

W: Well, I went there on July 5th and came back on August 15th.

  M: What about the course?

W: I think the course was well organized. The teachers were nice. They taught us to listen, speak, read and write in English, but it mostly focused on speaking. One interesting thing I found was that the English classes were different from ours because they were very free. You can sit anywhere you like in the classroom. You can ask the teacher questions at any time during the class, and you are welcome to share your ideas with the classmates and teachers. I really enjoy this kind of class.

M: How interesting! Maybe our teachers should try that.

  (Text 8)

M: Hello, can I help you?

W: Yes, I’d like to go on a sailing holiday this summer in Italy.

M: Have you been sailing before?

W: No. I wanted to go to Sweden last year, but I didn’t have enough money.

M: Well, it is quite expensive. Sailing holidays start at about three hundred pounds.

W: Yes, my friends went in August last year. They paid four hundred and fifty pounds each. The most I can pay is three hundred and eighty pounds.

M: Well, that should be enough. Would you like to be by the sea or a lake?

W: Well, I’d prefer a lake in the mountains.

M: Okay. The Aqua Center in north Italy will be best for you. That costs £370.

W: Okay. Can I pay by credit card? I haven’t got my checkbook.

  M: Yes, that’s fine.

  听第9段对话,回答第15~17小题。

  (Text 9)

M: Hi, Mrs. Smith. Nice to see you here.

W: Hi, Mr. White. I’m here to buy a pair of shoes for Tom again.

M: He wore out the pair you bought last month?

W: Yes. Sometimes I think I should buy him a pair of iron shoes.

M: Oh, no. What you need is a pair of strong and comfortable shoes.

  W: What’s your suggestion?

M: Maybe you should buy him a pair of leather shoes.

W: Tom doesn’t like leather shoes.

M: Then, how about sports shoes? They are strong and comfortable.

W: It seems that is the only choice. All right, I’ll take your suggestion. How about this pair?

  M: They are good.

  (Text 10)

Well, generally speaking, we could say that there are four stages to culture shock. First of allthe “honeymoon” stage. Uh, to the visitor, everything seems new, different, and novel. The food, the surroundings, and the buildings. And it produces a feeling of excitement: a desire to look around, to
