Indian and Chinese companies have signed business deals worth $16 billion on the opening day of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s three-day official visit to India.
Mr Wen, who last visited India five years ago, brings with him one of the largest teams of Chinese business leaders ever to visit India. The latest of a number of world leaders to visit India, Mr Wen is accompanied by some 400 Chinese business leaders.
China is India’s largest trading partner--two-way trade volumes are set to hit $ 60 billion this year.
Mr Wen is due to meet Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday. Indian and Chinese companies signed some 50 deals in power, telecommunications, steel, wind energy, food and marine products worth $16 billion at the end of a business conference attended by Mr Wen in the capital, Delhi, on Wednesday evening.
This overtakes the $10 billion of business agreements signed between Indian and American businessmen during the recent visit of US President Barack Obama to India.
“There is enough space in the world for the development of both China and India and there are enough areas for us to cooperate,” Mr Wen told the business conference.
The Chinese delegation dwarfs(使相形见拙) the number of trade chiefs led in recent weeks to India by US President Barack Obama (215), French President Nicolas Sarkozy (more than 60) and British Prime Minister David Cameron (about 40).
Later this week, Mr Wen will travel to India’s nuclear-armed neighboring rival(对手), Pakistan, for a two-day official visit.
Though bilateral trade with China is booming, the relationship is not benefiting India as much as it might, say analysts.
Delhi has been demanding greater access to Chinese medicine and IT markets as it seeks to level a large trade surplus(贸易顺差) in China’s favor of up to £25 billion.

Engineers at a major aerospace company were instructed Io test the effects of bird-strikes on the windshield(挡风玻璃) of airliners and military jets. To simulate(模拟D the effect of a goose colliding with an aircraft traveling at a high speed, the test engineers built a powerful gun, with which they fired dead chickens at the windshields. The simulations using the gun and the dead chickens worked extremely effectively, happily proving the suitability of the windshields, and several articles about the project appeared in the testing industry press.
It so happened that another test laboratory in a different part of the world was involved in assessing bird-strikes--in this case on the windshields and the drivers’ cabs(驾驶室) of new high-speed trains. The train test engineers had read about the pioneering test developed by the aerospace team, and so they approached them to ask for specifications of the gun and the testing methods. The aerospace engineers gave them details, and the train engineers set about building their own simulation.
The simulated bird-strike tests on the train windshields and cabs produced shocking results. The supposed high-speed train windshields offered little resistance to tile high-speed chickens; in fact every single windshield that was submitted for testing was struck to pieces, along with a number of train cabs and much of the test-lab itself.
The frightened train engineers were concerned that the new high-speed trains required a safety technology that was beyond their experience, so they contacted the aerospace team for advice and suggestions, sending them an extensive report of the tests and failures.
The brief reply came back from the aero-engineers: “You need to defrost (解冻) the chickens... “
24. The underlined phrase “colliding with” in the first paragraph can be replaced by _________.
A. hitting
B. catching
C. throwing
D. leaving
25. How did the test engineers simulate the effect of a goose colliding with an aircraft?
①defrosting the chickens
②building a powerful gun
③putting the chickens into the gun
④firing dead chickens at the windshields
A. ③②①④
B. ②③①④
C. ②①③④
D. ③①②④
26. The train engineers’ tests failed because
A. the trains’ speed was too high
B. the train windshields were not hard enough
C. the testing methods were not suitable for the train
D. they didn’t defrost the chickens before firing them
27. What can we learn from the aero-engineers’ brief reply?
A. The train engineers were not clever enough.
B. The aerospace team’s suggestions were not correct.
C. The aero-engineers were playing tricks on the train engineers.
D. The train engineers didn’t pay attention to energy detail

Much of Canada’s forestry production goes towards making pulp(纸浆) and paper. According to the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, Canada supplies 34% of the world’s wood pulp and 49% of its newsprint paper. If these paper products could be produced in some other way, Canadian forests could be preserved. Recently, a possible alternative way of producing paper has been suggested by agriculturalists and environmentalists: a plant called hemp.
Hemp has been grown by many countries. It produces fiber which can be made into paper, fuel, oils, textiles, food, and rope. For centuries, it was essential to the economies of many countries because it was used to make the ropes and cables used on sailing ships; colonial expansion and the establishment of a world-wide trading network would not have been possible without hemp. Nowadays, ships’ cables are usually made from wire, but scientists are now suggesting that the growing of hemp should be revived(恢复) for the production.
According to its supporters, four times as much paper can be produced from land using hemp rather than trees, and many environmentalists believe that the large-scale growing of hemp could reduce the pressure on Canada’s forests.
However, there is a problem: hemp is illegal in many countries of the world. This plant, so useful for fiber, rope, oil, fuel and textiles, is a species related to the plant from which marijuana(大麻) is produced. In fact, marijuana cannot be produced from the hemp plant, since it contains almost no THC(the active ingredient in the drug).
In recent years, a movement for legalization has been gathering strength. It is concerned only with the hemp plant used to produce fiber; this group wants to make it legal to grow the plant and sell the fiber for production.
