  One of London 2017's promises

local community is to be mindful of the effects of construction on the environment and on the people living around the Olympic Park.

Before we start working on the Olympic Park site,we produced a report called the Environment Statement which was part of the approved planning application for the Olympic Park. The Environment Statement mainly focused on the following aspects: the likely significant effects of the Olympic Park project on the environment and the measures necessary to manage its effects. The report took issues such as air quality, noise, ecology, water quality, flooding and transport into consideration.

As part of the report,we also began to carry out several surveys

  to

  the

  existing

environmental conditions on the site. These included surveys of plants and animals, noise, water and air quality.

We have recorded noise and dust levels around the Olympic Park and will publish our results on the website. We are taking measures to help manage and control dust and noise levels across the site.

We are protecting the waterways which run around and through the Park from the effects of construction. For example,we are storing chemicals and oils offsite so that they do not pollute the waterways.

We have relocated a number of wild birds and other animals to new habitats so they will not be affected by the construction. They will be brought back to the area after the construction ends.

We have also produced a Code of Construction Practices which contractors must follow for any construction activity in the Park.It includes information about working hours and how to manage the effects of construction like noise and dust.

  contractor n.承包商

Researchers from France and Italy discovered that Canadian parents are less strict with their children than mothers and fathers in France and Italy.

“Our most important finding was the difference between Canadians and the others,” said Professor Michel Claes, the lead author of the study.“Canadians focus on independence and negotiation. On the other hand,Italians, for example, exercise more control. We found Canadians seem to focus on negotiation in case of a conflict.”

Claes said Canada,France and Italy were selected for the study because they share important cultural and social factors.“We chose FrenchCanadians because they share the same language as France, and originally came from France and share certain values.Italy was included because it was considered to have similar, strong and important family values,” he explained.

The researchers examined the emotional ties between parents and their children by questioning 1,256 students aged 11 to 19 years old.

Canadian students reported less control and more free actions, according to the study.Italian parents were stricter and French parents were somewhere in the middle.

Claes explains that the differences lie in education in Canada,France and Italy.

“North America has its own educational values, which promote individualization.Tolerance and comprehension are encouraged.Italy,on the other hand, promotes respect of authority, control, and the need for permission,” he said.

Children from all three countries described their mothers as warm and communicative.Italian and Canadian children had similar feelings about their fathers, and reported high levels of emotional ties. But French fathers were generally thought by their children to be more distant and cold.

“We were surprised by this,” Claes admitted.“It seems as though the relationships between French mothers and their children were becoming closer over time, while fathers maintain a form of distance and coldness, which is more of a source of conflict in France than in the other countries.”

  请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的单词空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个。

New research suggests that at least one in seven home kitchens would not pass the kind of health inspection commonly administered to restaurants.

The study from California's Los Angeles County found that only 61 percent of home kitchens would get an A or B if put through the standard of a restaurant inspection. At least 14 percent would fail — not even getting a C.

“I would say if they got below a C,I'm not sure I would like them to invite me to dinner,”said Dr.Jonathan Fielding, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

In comparison, nearly all Los Angeles County restaurants — 98 percent — get A or B scores each year.

The results are based not on actual inspections, but on an Internet quiz taken by about 13,000 adults. So it's hard to use it to compare the conditions in home kitchens to those in restaurants, which involve trained inspectors giving objective assessments of dirt, pests, and food storage and handling practices.

What's more, experts don't believe that study is representative of all households, because people who are more conscientious about food safety are more likely to take the quiz.

“You'll miss a big population who don't have home computers or just really don't care about the cleanliness of their kitchens,”said Martin Bucknavage,a food safety specialist with Penn State University's Department of Food Science.

A more comprehensive look would probably find that an even smaller percentage of home kitchens would do well in a restaurant inspection,he suggested.

In 2006,the county health department began a home kitchen selfinspection program, designed to help consumers learn how to store and prepare food safely. The department also began offering an online quiz with 45 yes or no questions that simulates(模仿)a restaurant inspection checklist.

People are asked, for example,if their refrigerator temperature is 41 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, whether raw meat is stored below other foods on refrigerator shelves, and whether fruits and vegetables are always thoroughly rinsed before they are eaten.

The study is based on quizzes taken through 2008.Overall,34 percent got an A,meaning they correctly answered at least 90 percent of the questions.Another 27 percent got a B,25 percent a C,and 14 percent failed to score at least a C.

An estimated 87 million cases of foodborne illness occur in the United States each year, including 371,000 hospitalizations and 5,700 deaths, according to an Associated Press calculation that uses a CDC formula and recent population estimates.

Many outbreaks that receive publicity are centered on people who got sick after eating at a restaurant, catered celebration or large social gathering. In this summer's outbreak linked to salmonella in eggs, several illnesses were first identified in clusters among restaurant patrons. But experts believe the bulk of food poisonings are unreported illnesses from food prepared at home.

__6__of the quiz Only 61 percent of home kitchens got an A or B.

  At least 14 percent didn't even get a C.
