Though larger cities were mostly spared,Sunday’s tornadoes damaged some small towns in the middle of the U.S.One of the hardest hit was Van,Texas,a town of about 2,600 people located 70 miles southeast of Dallas.Winds there reached up to 140 miles per hour and damaged about 30 percent of the area.Weather experts say it was the strongest tornado to hit the town in more than 70 years.
Emergency workers in Van moved quickly to help those affected, but two people were killed and more than two dozen were injured by the tornado’s winds.A driver in the nearby town of Corsicana was killed by floodwaters that had risen after the storm.
In Lake City,Iowa,a tornado tore the roof off South Central Calhoun High School. One hundred and fifty people had gathered in the safety of the school’s basement, and all escaped without major harm.
Nine people were injured in the 130-mph winds of a tornado that touched down in Delmont,South Dakota, but tornadoes weren’t the only severe weather that state saw on Sunday.Residents in the Black Hills region were faced with a late-spring snowfall of 10 to 18 inches.
Scientists measure tornadoes using the Enhanced Fujita(EF) Scale. It categorizes tornadoes based on the amount of damage they cause and their estimated wind speed.EF1 tornadoes are the weakest, while EF5 tornadoes are the severest. The tornado in Van was categorized as an EF3.
Although tornadoes can happen in any state, they are most common in the central U.S.This is why that part of the country is nicknamed(给……起绰号) Tornado Alley.Though this past weekend’s storms were damaging, they were not abnormal for this time of year.More tornadoes hit the U.S.in May than in any other month, according to the National Weather Service(NWS).
“We’ve had at least one tornado reported somewhere in the nation every day since May 2,”weather expert Greg Carbin said.“It’s a dangerous time of year.”

One of the most ignored issues today is one that affects all life.Global warming and deforestation(森林开伐)are happening at a surprising rate, but it still seems like a foreign concept. The earth’s temperature has been increasing, though slowly, but this is something we cannot simply reverse (逆转).All the damage we do to our earth is permanent (永久的),and though we have already done exceptional damage,we can stop it from worsening.
This issue has not yet affected us directly,so we choose to ignore it and continue on with our everyday life.People have the need for visual evidence or proof before they decide that an issue is real, but by the time we have that evidence,it may be too late.
About one and a half acres of our most important source of oxygen is lost every second. Our life source, the rainforest, is being eliminated(根除) for our own selfish reasons.Christ will return eventually, but until then,we must take care of our home.We are trying to live on a planet that is slowly being destroyed, and soon it will be like basketball players trying to dribble(运球前进)a ball on grass and mud.For the time being, our kindness depends on the resources God has given us,and it has become like taking care of a pet.Parents will not allow a child a second dog until he shows he can take care of the first one,and God will not supply this earth again until we show that we can be responsible and take care of it.
Showing this reality can only come with time, but time is valuable and slowly running out. Many have taken the first few steps towards saving our planet, but our only hope for survival is that all of the world will realise this before it is too late.

Tips for writing the college essay
While some high school seniors begin to enjoy writing their college essay, others fail to see the importance of it.1. Creating the college essay is supposed to be a fun,and exciting task.It is a process of self-discovery.Some helpful tips:
1.Have fun!2. Relax, breathe and realize that this is the time to expose a side of you that a transcript(学生成绩单) cannot.
2.3. The worst thing you can do is pick an ordinary topic.Stay away from volunteer work, your dead dog and vacations.Admission counselors(入学辅导员) see thousands of essays a month;make sure your essay is distinct to your experience and personality.Do not focus on what you think they want you to write, but what is actually significant to you.
3.Don’t try to make yourself a victim.Although it is effective to appeal to the emotions of an admission counselor,I do not recommend writing an essay about sad stories.Self-pity can be annoying, and most admission counselors do not want that to be their first impression of you.The only exception to this is if you have an inspiring struggle that you overcame.4.
4.Your essay is not a longer version of your resume(简历).If you sent in a resume, there is absolutely no need to restate what is on it.Many students like bragging(吹嘘) about how much they do.It is amazing that you are involved, but admission counselors do not only want to hear about how much you do,especially if they already see this on your resume.5.
Good luck on your college essay!
A.It was received well by many.
B.Don’t settle for basic—be creative!
C.When you get upset,it is reflected in your work.
D.You can talk about how a work changed your life.
E.They want to see aspects of you that cannot be shown on a resume.
F.In some cases, these 600 words determine an acceptance or a rejection.
G.Make sure that the story is focused on your growth, not on the struggle.
答案与解析:
【语篇导读】本文是说明文。文章是写大学申请论文的几点建议。

3.B 解析:由下文的“The worst thing you can do is pick an ordinary topic...but what is actually significant to you”可知,本段主要是说大学申请论文的内容要避免老套的话题,应该体现自己的独特性。故B项恰当。
4.G 解析:G项与上文的“have an inspiring struggle that you overcame”相呼应。
5.E 解析:E项与上文的“admission counselors do not only want to hear about how much you do,especially if they already see this on your resume”相呼应。
No Plastic Bags
It is reported in Tianjin Daily that a big supermarket has made a decision that in order to reduce white pollution, the supermarket will no longer provide the customers with free plastic bags.
In my opinion, the decision will have both positive and negative effects. As is known, people throw away used plastic bags wherever they want to and the white garbage is becoming a danger to people’s life.
To solve this problem,I think the supermarket can provide paper bags or that the customers should be encouraged to bring along bags of their own.But what I want to point out is that stopping providing plastic bags is far from the best way to protect the earth from the white pollution. It’s not until everyone understands the importance of looking after the environment that the world will be really clean.
