  (2017·南通第二次调研,C)

Scientists from the University of East Anglia have identified four new manmade gases that are contributing to the damage to the ozone(臭氧) layer. Two of the gases are accumulating at a rate that is causing concern among researchers.

Worries over the growing ozone hole have seen the production of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases restricted since the mid 1980s.But the precise origin of these new, similar substances remains a mystery.

Lying in the atmosphere, the ozone layer plays a critical role in blocking harmful UV rays, which cause cancers in humans and reproductive problems in animals.

Scientists from the British Antarctic Survey were the first to discover a huge “hole” in the ozone over Antarctica in 1985.The evidence quickly pointed to CFC gases, which were invented in the 1920s,and were widely used in refrigeration.Extraordinarily, global action was rapidly agreed to deal with CFCs and the Montreal Protocol to limit these substances came into being in 1987.A total global ban on production came into force in 2010.

Now,the newly discovered four new gases can destroy ozone and are getting into the atmosphere from as yet unidentified sources.Three of the gases are CFCs and one is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon(HCFC),which can also damage ozone.

The research has shown that four gases were not around in the atmosphere at all until the 1960s,which suggests they are manmade. The scientists discovered the gases by analyzing polar snow pack.Air from this snow is a natural archive of what was in the atmosphere up to 100 years ago.The researchers also looked at modern air samples, collected at remote Cape Grim in Tasmania.

They estimate that about 74,000 tonnes of these gases have been released into the atmosphere. Two of the gases are accumulating at significant rates. However, they don’t know where the new gases are being released from and this should be investigated.Possible sources include chemicals for insecticide(杀虫剂) production and solvents(溶液) for cleaning electronic components. The three CFCs are being destroyed very slowly in the atmosphere—so even if emissions(散发) were to stop immediately, they will still be around for many decades to come.

Of the four species identified,CFC113a seems the most worrying as there is a very small but growing emission source somewhere, maybe from agricultural insecticides. We should find it and take it out of production.

58.What do we know about the newly discovered gases?

A.Some are surely produced by the development of agriculture.

B.The CFCs will have a long impact once they are released.

C.They gather together in the atmosphere at a medium speed.

D.Their amounts are not large enough to cause damage to us.

59.The underlined word “archive” in Paragraph 6 is the closest to the meaning of “

  ”.

  A.state

  B.resource

  C.phenomenon

  D.storeroom

60.What will the scientists probably attempt to do about the gases next?

A.Find out what can replace things like insecticides and put them into use.

B.Find out how they destroy ozone and get rid of those in the atmosphere.

C.Find out where they are exactly from and stop them from being released.

D.Find out if HCFC is more harmful than CFCs and take proper measures.

My grandmother was from a town in Michigan.Summer after summer,I enjoyed staying with my grandparents as a young child.I was from the city and loved the small town they lived in.People knew everyone, their kids, their pets, their ancestors. The bond with them continued to grow as I grew and they got older.Grandma was always using her hands for something exciting. She would make little sandwiches and we’d have tea parties. She’d make beautiful quilts for each one.I remember the small thimble (顶针) she would use while doing her needle work.

A few years ago, when Grandma left this earth,I bid farewell to a loving grandmother. How quickly our lives can change. We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier,on her 91st birthday.

I missed her very much.On one particular birthday, when I was feeling a little low, something happened to make me feel like she was sharing that special day with me.I was arranging some colorful pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow. It was small and hard.I moved the object to a seam (接缝) that I carefully opened, and to my delight out came a tiny silver thimble! How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her.Not realizing it had fallen off her finger,I pictured her sewing it in that little pillow that I just happened to place on my bedspread that day.I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I’ve collected over the years, where I could continue to see the gift God chose to reveal to me.What a precious memory of a very special lady who somehow,I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble inside my pillow.

I made some tea, using my best china,as Grandma always did,and enjoyed my tea and Grandma’s thimble. What a wonderful birthday that was!

  (2015·苏锡常镇四市高三教学情况调研一,D)

Is gun good or bad for children? For many years I emphasized its harmlessness. When concerned parents expressed doubt about letting their children have toy guns, because they didn’t want to encourage them in the slightest degree to become criminals,I would explain how little connection there was.In the course of growing up,children have a natural tendency to bring their aggressiveness more and more under control if their parents encourage this.1 to 2yearolds,when they are angry with another child, may bite the child’s arm without hesitation. But by 3 or 4 they have already learned that aggression is not right. However, they may pretend to shoot their mother or father, but smiling to assure them that the gun and the aggressive behaviour aren’t to be taken seriously.

In the 6 to 12yearold period, children will play an earnest game of war,but it has lots of rules. There may be arguments, but real fights are relatively rare.At this age children don’t shoot at their mother or father, even in fun. It’s not that the parents have turned stricter;the children’s own conscience has.In adolescence aggressive feelings become much stronger, but well broughtup children can turn them into athletics and other competition or into kidding their friends.

In other words,I’d explain that playing at war is a natural step in the disciplining of the aggression of young children;that a cautious parent doesn’t really need to worry about producing a criminal.

But nowadays I’d give parents much more encouragement to guide their child away from violence.A number of incidents have convinced me of the importance of this.

One of the first things that made me change my mind, several years ago,was an observation that an experienced nursery school teacher told me about. Her children were hitting each other much more than previously, without reason. When she talked to them, they would protest,“But that’s what the Three Stooges do.”(This was a children’s TV program full of violence which immediately became very popular.)

What further shocked me into reconsidering my view was the assassination(暗杀) of the former President, and the fact that some schoolchildren cheered about this.(I didn’t so much blame the children as I blamed the kind of parents who will say about a President they dislike,“I’d shoot him if I got the chance!”)

These incidents made me think of other evidences that Americans often tolerate lawlessness and violence. We were hard on the Indians and the later waves of immigrants. At times we denied justice to groups with different religions or political views. And now a great percentage of our adult as well as our child population has been endlessly fascinated with dramas of Western violence and with cruel crime stories,in movies and on television. This doesn’t necessarily mean that we Americans on the average have more aggressiveness inside us than the people of other nations.I think rather that the aggressiveness we have is less controlled, from childhood on.

To me it seems very clear that in order to have a more stable and civilized national life we must bring up the next generation of Americans with a greater respect for law and for other people’s rights than in the past. There are many ways in which we could and should teach these attitudes. One simple opportunity we could seize in the first half of childhood is to show our disapproval of lawlessness and violence in television programs and in children’s gun play.

I also believe that the survival of the world now depends on a much greater awareness of the need to avoid war and to actively seek peaceful agreements. There are enough nuclear arms to completely destroy all civilization. This terrifying situation demands a much greater stability and selfcontrol on the part of national leaders and citizens than they have ever shown in the past.We owe it to our children to prepare them deliberately for this awesome responsibility.

65.The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refers to “

  ”.

  A.controlling their aggressiveness

  B.playing with toy guns

  C.aggressive behaviour

  D.the course of growing up

66.Based on the author’s view about the relationship between children’s aggressiveness and their age, which of the following is TRUE?

A.A 2yearold boy knows that it is not correct to behave aggressively.

B.The older children become, the less aggressive they will be.

C.6 to 12yearolds enjoy war games but develop them into argument and serious fights.

D.Adolescents’ aggressiveness is often displayed in the form of competition.

67.What conclusion does the author intend to draw from the story told by the nursery school teacher?

A.Watching violence can lower a child’s standard of behaviour.

B.Violent TV programs should be banned in nursery schools.

C.Children are generally lawless or violent nowadays.

D.It is acceptable to let children have toy guns.

68.What does Paragraph 7 mainly talk about?

A.Examples showing that Americans are more aggressive than other nations.

B.Evidences proving that America has a long history of lawlessness and violence.

C.The idea that children are less able to put their aggressiveness under control.

D.More reasons why the author changed his view on the main issue of the article.

69.What is a must if people intend to enjoy stability and civilized national life?

A.To show disapproval of gun play in television programs.

B.To make people aware that there are already enough nuclear arms.

C.To elect national leaders with greater stability and selfcontrol.

D.To bring up children who show more respect for the law and others’ rights.

70.Which of the following serves best as the title of the article?

  A.How Does Age Influence Aggressiveness?

B.Are American Children Becoming More Aggressive?

  C.Should Children Play with Guns?

D.What Should Parents Teach Their Children?

  第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

  请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

  注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

It doesn’t matter if books are delivered in print or by smart phone;the main thing is to get lost in reading them.Reading books is vital for human development.

Why should we bother reading a book? All children say this occasionally. Many of the 12 million adults in Britain with reading difficulties repeat it to themselves daily. In a world of accelerating technology, increasing time poverty and decreasing attention, should they invest precious time sinking into a good book?

The discovery that our brains are physically changed by the experience of reading is something many of us will understand instinctively(本能地),as we think back to the way an extraordinary book had a transformative effect on the way we viewed the world. This transformation only takes place when we lose ourselves in a book, abandoning the emotional and mental chatter of the real world. That’s why studies have found this kind of deep reading makes us more sensitive to the inner lives of others.

Rationally,we know that reading is the foundation stone of all education, and therefore an essential basis of the knowledge economy. So reading is—or should be—an aspect of public policy. But perhaps even more significant is its emotional role as the starting point for individual voyages of personal development and pleasure.Books can open up emotional, imaginative and historical landscapes that equal and extend the corridors(走廊) of the web. They can help create and strengthen our sense of self.If reading were to decline significantly,it would change the very nature of our species. If we,in the future, are no longer wired for selfreflection and creative thought,we will die out.

However, technology throws up as many solutions as it does challenges:for every door it closes, another opens. So the ability, offered by devices like ereaders, smart phones and tablets,to carry an entire library in your hand is an amazing opportunity.Publishers need to use every new piece of technology to embed(使融入) longform reading within our culture. We should concentrate on the message, not worry about the medium. We must also get better at using the ability of the Internet to inform readers, and potential readers, about all the extraordinary new books that are published every year, and to renew their acquaintance with the best of rich literary tradition.

The research shows that if we stop reading,we will be different people:less complicated, less considerate, less interesting. There can hardly be a better reason for fighting to protect the future of the book.

  第五部分 书面表达(满分25分)

  请阅读下面短文,并按要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

  (2015·扬中高级中学高三模拟)

A set of textbooks designed to help high school students learn about traditional Chinese culture is to be published soon,Beijing Times reported on Monday.

The books are the first nationallevel works of their kind and have been developed by a working group that promotes traditional culture. They will be used by students from autumn this year, the report said.

The set contains four classics from ancient times. Two of the works,Confucian Analects and Mencius, are for 10thgrade students, while the other two,Great Learning and Dao De Jing, will be used by 11th graders.

The initiative follows a series of steps the authorities have taken in recent years to spread and promote traditional Chinese culture on campus.

Last April, the Ministry of Education released a series of guidelines requiring the inclusion of more information about traditional culture in primary and middle school textbooks, especially those used for subjects such as Chinese language, history, art and physical education.

The guidelines said students’ knowledge of traditional culture will be tested in the senior high school entrance examination and the gaokao, the college entrance exam.

  参考范文

From this autumn, new schoolbooks highlighting the traditional Chinese culture will be used by senior students, whose knowledge of the country’s ancient traditions will also be tested in the gaokao.

There’re several factors accounting for the move. The set of books are the significant component of traditional Chinese culture and provide teenagers with internal codes of conduct and thus they will play a positive role in their process of growth.Besides, the basic education system hasn’t attached enough importance to the learning of traditional culture for quite a long time, and the textbooks are a beneficial effort to reverse that situation. In addition, learning traditional culture is not solely about reciting texts—it’s about utilizing ancient wisdom to solve current problems.

Personally,I strongly support and welcome the move in that it is an initiative to bring Chinese traditional culture back. However, considering individual differences between students,I am not in complete agreement with the practice that they will be tested in the gaokao.
