And then life goes on. It’s also good to take a tiny little baby songbird and __10__ it grow up. The changes are amazing.”

(2015·长沙高三模拟考试)Along rocky coastlines of the Arctic Ocean,a change is taking place, perhaps as great as disappearing sea ice but less evident to the eye.The ecological base is changing, with existing algae(海藻)replaced by warmth and light-loving species. It might not seem like much, but algae form the base of ocean food chains, and the change is happening fast.

“The character of these far-ranging changes, confirmed by our statistical analyses, provides a convincing case for tipping points(临界点)being crossed,”wrote researchers led by the scientist Susanne Kortsch who studies life in the sea.For scientists, tipping points aren’t just pop-culture shorter way of saying, but refer to a specific type of conversion:happen quickly and not develop from one thing to another in a single smooth series of stages, with one set of conditions translating into another.

About life in the sea, that’s been seen in the western Mediterranean, now controlled by animals with no backbone, and Caribbean coral reefs(珊瑚礁)now filled by algae. As for the Arctic, they’ve been discovered, but mostly on land or in freshwater lakes and swamps.

Kortsch and her University of Tromso colleagues went to sea, examining two Arctic bays(海湾)in the western Svalbard islands.Researchers have studied those bays for more than three decades.Between 1980 and 2010,the region’s summer ice-free season lengthened by an average of 3.3 days per year.

“Such changes aren’t simple,”say Kortsch’s group. They’re what ecologists call regime shifts(稳态转换),in which one set of plants and animals is almost entirely replaced by another. They’re not limited to two bays but appear on much of the Arctic Ocean’s shores, either. How will these changes influence food chains? It stands to reason that some changes will occur, but accurate data is needed.“At present,we simply don’t know the answers,”Kortsch said.

The researchers do infer that these new coastline ecosystems could be more productive than before.Warming in the Arctic is accelerating at twice the average global rate.By 2050 the Arctic Ocean may be completely ice-free in summer. For these new coastline ecosystems, only one thing can be said with certainty: It’s not going to be like what it was.

1.The reason why algae are very important to the ocean is that ________.

A.they can keep sea ice from disappearing

B.they form the base of ocean food chains

C.they form the top class of ocean food chains

D.they can become main food of mankind

2.What does the underlined word“conversion”in Paragraph 2 mean?

  A.Change.

  B.Dialogue.

  C.Challenge.

  D.Choice.

3.We can learn from the passage that ________.

A.Kortsch’s group has studied the environment in the Arctic Ocean for three decades

B.tipping points refer to sea ice in the Arctic Ocean which is disappearing gradually

C.how the food chains would be influenced still needs study

D.life in the sea can’t be influenced by the changes in the Arctic Ocean

4.What conclusion can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The Arctic Ocean will keep the same situation in the next two decades.

B.The Arctic Ocean’s situation suggests global warming is quickening sharply.

C.Regime shifts occur only in several regions of the Arctic Ocean.

D.New coastline ecosystems in the Arctic Ocean could be less productive than before.

5.What’s the best title for the passage?

A.Arctic Coastlines Being in Face of Danger Now

A study in China’s Qin Mountains, which is home to around 270 pandas—about a fifth of the world’s wild population—predicts that the amount of bamboo will decline(减少) this century as the global warming continues.

“The pandas may face a shortage of food unless they can find alternative food resources,”a team of researchers from the U.S.and China warn in the journal Nature Climate Change.

The international symbol of environmental conservation efforts, the giant panda is a picky eater.99% of its diet consists of bamboo. It eats up to 38 kilograms per day. This means the black-and-white bear’s survival is closely linked to a thriving(繁荣的) bamboo habitat.

Bamboo itself also has a slow reproductive rate, flowering only every 30 to 35 years, which means it would be slow to adapt to a change in a local climate, according to the researchers.

Based on the data gathered for this study, researchers predict that three bamboo species which make up almost the entire diet of the pandas in Qin Mountains, will all but disappear in a warmer climate.

“Results suggest that almost the entire panda habitat in the region may disappear by the end of the 21st century,”the study’s authors write.

The calculations are based on different warming scenarios(方案)projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change—ranging from rises of 2℃ to 5℃ in summer by the 21st century’s end,and 3 to 8℃ in winter.

These predictions were made based on data on rainfall and emission of greenhouse gas as well as historical growth patterns,to consider the future of bamboo.

Already, deforestation(滥伐森林)is threatening the survival of about half of all bamboo species worldwide.

The researchers say bamboo distribution has historically fluctuated in response to changes in the climate.

In modern times, though, even if other areas were to become climatically more suitable for bamboo growth, these would be far away and fall outside the present network of protected panda reserves.

The findings should be used “for proactive planning to protect areas that have a better climatic chance of providing adequate food sources”.

6.What is the problem with giant pandas?

  A.Their habitat is disappearing.

  B.Their number is reducing sharply.

C.They will not have bamboo to eat.

  D.They have difficulty in reproducing.

7.What do we know about pandas?

  A.They feed chiefly on bamboo.

  B.They are particular about partners.

C.They are sensitive to climate changes.

D.They are native to Qin Mountains.

  8.What is typical of bamboo?

A.It flowers for a short period.

B.It can live for as long as 35 years.

C.It grows only in warm regions.

D.It is slow in reproducing itself.

9.Which word can replace the underlined word “fluctuated” in Paragraph 10?

  A.formed

  B.changed

  C.disappeared

  D.worsened

10.Why can’t pandas get access to bamboo in other areas?

A.They are limited to nature reserves.

B.They don’t like walking far away.

C.They are feed with all kinds of food.

D.They are not allowed to walk freely.

Binge drinking used to mean drinking to excess (过度) over several days. Now,however, the term refers to the heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time.

Alcohol stores, bars, and alcoholic drink companies make drinking seem attractive and fun. It’s easy for a high school student to get caught up in a social scene with lots of peer pressure.Certainly, one of the biggest areas of peer pressure is drinking.

Other reasons why people drink include: they’re curious — they want to know what it’s like to drink alcohol. They believe that it will make them feel good, not realizing it could just so easily make them sick and hung-over (宿醉未醒的).They may look at alcohol as a way to reduce stress, even though it can end up creating more stress. They want to feel older.

Many people don’t think about the negative side of drinking.Although they think about the possibility of getting drunk, they may not give much consideration to being hung-over or sick.

You may know from experience that drinking too much can lead to difficulty concentrating, memory faults, mood changes, and other problems that affect your day-to-day life. But binge drinking carries more serious and longer-lasting risks as well.

If you think you have a binge-drinking problem, get help as soon as possible. The best approach is to talk to an adult you trust — if you can’t approach your parents, talk to your doctor, school counselor, church member, aunt,or uncle. It can be hard for some people to talk to adults about these issues,so an alternative could be a trusted friend or an elder sibling (兄弟姐妹) who is easy to talk to.

Title: ____________ Definition ●In the past: drinking to excess

David Jones is probably not somebody you want to hang out with. Not because he isn’t a cool person, but because he is living with 40 deadly snakes.

Jones is living in a room for 121 days with more than three dozen constrictors, green mambas, boomslangs and other deadly snakes in an attempt to set a Guinness world record. The record for most days spent confined to a room with this particular number of snakes is 113,set by Martin Smit in 2008.

“I am hoping people will realize that we can live with these fantastic creatures without fearing and killing them.People come and see me here and are constantly amazed at how I am interact with these animals. The snakes are not restrained in any way and make the full use of the entire room including my bed, shower and toilet,” Jones explains. They mainly hide out in cupboards or on the various makeshift (临时的)branches or bushes that Jones has in their shared quarters.Once a week, someone brings captured mice and rats to offer as a sacrifice to the snakes.

David Jones is forced to move the snakes with a “hook stick” throughout the day,so that he can do things like sitting at his desk or typing on his laptop, his only means of contacting the outside world.

The snakes often drop on his pillow or shoulders as he’s trying to work or sleep, but there have so far been no instances of Jones being bitten by one of these deadly snakes. He said,“If I give them respect,we can live together happily.”

考查固定搭配at the sight of“一看到”。

  3.解析:选B。考查省略和虚拟语气,对过去的虚拟用would have done,句中would have后省略了attended the opening ceremony。

  6.解析:选B。referred to 是过去分词作定语修饰the problems,be前省略了should,为虚拟语气,因为主句的谓语动词是demand。

  8.解析:选A。

Bruce has brains. In fact,I doubt whether anyone in the class has a higher IQ than him.

  11.解析:选D。be in love表状态,可与一段时间for a year连用,fall in love表动作,不可与一段时间连用。 He even didn’t know可知应该用过去完成时。

  13.解析:选A。be set in“以……

  2.解析:选B。根据空后的“ended up volunteering there for 11 years”可知,她在那儿做志愿工作。

  11.解析:选A。

it wasn’t long before后接过去时,意为“没过多久就……”,是固定搭配。

  答案:before

  答案:the

此空与“and some small”相对应。故填large/big。

  答案:large/big

  答案:by

  答案:from

  答案:it

  答案:that

  A

根据第一段最后一句中的“...but algae form the base of ocean food chains”可知,海藻是海洋食物链的基础,所以它对海洋非常重要。

2.解析:选A。 根据该句中的“happen quickly...with one set of conditions

  translating into another.”

根据第五段最后三句中的“How will these changes influence food chains? It stands to reason that some changes will occur, but accurate data is needed.‘At present,we simply don’t know the answers’...”

根据最后一段第二句“Warming in the Arctic is accelerating at twice the average global rate.”

根据文章第一段第一句“Along rocky coastlines of the Arctic Ocean,a change is taking place, perhaps as great as disappearing sea ice...”

  7.解析:选A。 故选A。

  10.解析:选A。
