Text 10
Good morning, Alice. Yes, this is Ernie. Look, I'd like to discuss something with you. I'm thinking of opening a small candy store downtown. There are four places I might rent. The first place is on Mac Street next to the theatre. It's 400 dollars a month. The second place is on Anderson Road at the corner of Spring Street. The third place is on Main Street across the camera shop and behind the high school. The second place is the cheapest, 350 dollars a month. The third place is the most expensive at 500 dollars a month. The fourth place on Benefit Street is across the street from the high school and costs 450 dollars a month. I'm just not sure which place to choose. Of course, Main Street probably has a candy shop, so the second place would be a better location. It's across from the park where children play, and children like candy. Well, if you think of anything, let me know. Bye.

M: I can't agree with you. Anyway, it promotes the development of our society.
Text 2
W: Do you have any idea what time it is now? Have you ever heard your phone?
M: I'm sorry. But my phone ran out of power. I got back here as fast as I could because I knew you'd be worried.
Text 3
W: There is a wonderful play on at the Theatre Royal next Saturday. If you like, I can book four seats for us.
M: All right. I'll ask Janet if she is free then. I'll let you know tomorrow.
Text 4

W: One pair is 14 yuan, but two pairs, we charge only 20 yuan.
M: Well, two pairs, please.
Text 5
W: Trent, I've got something to tell you. I got fired today.
M: What? You just got promoted last week! How could they do this to you?
W: April Fool's Day!
Text 6
M: It is a lovely day, isn't it?
W: Yes. Nice and sunny.
M: It's much better than last week. It was so hot and wet.
W: Yes. This is just wonderful. I kept wishing it would become cool and autumn would be here a little earlier this year.
M: I wonder what it is going to be like tomorrow.
W: I didn't hear the weather report on the radio.
M: By the way, this afternoon we'll have to go to the farm.
W: Right. We'd better ride bicycles there on such a day.
Text 7

W: Yeah.
M: Maybe we should go to bed soon. It's almost midnight now. We should be up by 7:00.

W: It's a new story about a woman from New Jersey. She had a 51pound bump on her stomach but she waited six weeks to go to the hospital because she didn't have health insurance. After six weeks, she turned 65 years old, which meant she qualified for free medical treatment.
M: 51 pounds sounds like a lot. She must have been really sick.

W: Look, Mr. Travers, I can explain.
M: Ms. Robinson, you know we need people who can keep up and work as a team.
W: Mr. Travers, my mother was just diagnosed with stomach cancer. I've been spending all my time outside of work at the hospital with her. I've been so exhausted and then Morison in my office made a joke the other day about cancer victims losing their hair, so we quarreled.
M: Oh, I have no idea, Ms. Robinson.
W: I know my work has suffered these past few weeks, but I promise I will make up for it.
M: Listen, why don't you take a couple of days off? It's much more important that you be with your mother while she is recovering.
W: Really, sir? Thank you so much!
M: My pleasure! And I will have a word with Morison. That kind of talk has no place in this office.
Text 10
When I was 15, I announced to my class that I was going to write my own books. Half the classmates ignored me and the rest nearly fell out of their chair laughing. I was so hurt that I burst into tears. That night I wrote a short, sad poem about broken dreams and mailed it to a local newspaper. Surprisingly, they published it and sent me two dollars. I was a published and paid writer. I showed my fellow classmates the paper. They laughed and said, “Just luck.” But I had tasted the success and I had sold the first thing I wrote. That was more than the laugh had done to me. During the next two years, I sold dozens of poems, letters, jokes and essays. By the time I graduated from high school, I had owned a book filled with my published works. And now I am a professional writer and my novels are popular with readers. But I still keep the habit of reviewing that first published poem when I am in low spirits or meet unfair book reviews. It will always remind me how I started in the first place.
