(2017·贵州德江一中模拟)A student with the nickname (绰号) of “Silo” from University of Wisconsin is eating his way through school competitively. At present, Eric Dahl ranks third in the world of competitive eating, which is determined by All Pro Eating rankings, though he once held the top spot. So far Dahl has earned more than 18,000 dollars in prize money to help pay for his education.

“I'm eating for my education,” Eric Dahl said in a proud tone.“I think it will help me get through and achieve my success in my education.”

Dahl was drawn to competitive eating in 2011, at the former Big Red's Steakhouse in Madison. Dahl didn't want to pay for his meal so he signed up for a challenge: eat a threepound cheesesteak sandwich in less than 10 minutes and skip (略过) the bill. He finished his eating within 5 minutes and 50 seconds.

Dahl's first pay came from Dickey's Barbecue Pit in suburban Minneapolis, where he earned D|S250 for eating nine pulledpork sandwiches within six minutes. The former high school athlete found the competition and its overthetop atmosphere reminding him of professional wrestling.

“I really get excited when the crowd starts cheering,” he said. “I am friends with other competitive eaters, but once I'm on stage I don't have any friends but we have become opponents (对手).”

Dahl walks a few miles a day, lifts weights twice a week and plays soccer and climbs mountains with his 220pound weight. He eats no more than 3,100 calories a day, mostly vegetables to avoid increasing his waistline, and stretches (撑大) his stomach by eating 10 pounds of cabbage in a single sitting followed by a lot of water.

His next challenge is scheduled for Saturday. Dahl will try to win D|S1,000 at a

national pizzaeating contest on Library Mall at the University of WisconsinMadison. Good luck to him and let's wait for his good news.

1.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Most of Dahl's good friends take part in eating competitions together.

B.Dahl develops a good relationship with his competitors behind stage.

C.Dahl finds the eating competition is a little like professional wrestling.

D.Dahl got his first award at the University of WisconsinMadison.

2.Dahl trains for competitive eating through the following ways EXCEPT ________.

  A.drinking plenty of wine

  B.doing some sports

  C.mostly eating vegetables

  D.stretching his stomach

3.We can learn from the last paragraph that ________.

A.the highest award will be no more than D|S1,000

B.the competitive eating is concerned with vegetables

C.Dahl will continue his competitive eating this Saturday

D.the author believes Dahl will win the eating competition

4.Where can you most probably read the passage?

  A.In a science textbook.

  B.In a travel book.

  C.In a medical report.

  D.In a newspaper.

  A

与上文的“For one thing”相对应,此处应用another。for one thing ... for another ...

上文“these make it more and more popular with high school students”与下文“many parents and teachers hold a different view”之间存在转折关系,故填表示转折关系的并列连词but,且单词首字母必须大写。

根据下文的“should be used to study”可判断出,此处缺少主语,且指代前一句中的“a lot of time and energy”,故用which引导非限制性定语从句。

分析句子结构可知,此处“my dad”作“listening to”的宾语,“my dad”与tell之间存在主谓关系,故用现在分词telling作宾语补足语。

Ⅱ.1.解析:选C 根据下文“...almost caused him to despair (绝望)”可知,船长此时是沮丧的。
