Parents say that honesty is the best policy, but they regularly lie to their children as a way of influencing their behavior and emotions, finds new research from the University of Toronto and the University of California.
Surprisingly little has been published on the subject of parental lying, so Gail Heyman, professor of psychology at the University of California, Diem Luu, a former student of the University of California, and Kang Lee, professor at the University Toronto, set out to explore the underresearched phenomenon.
They asked US participants in two related studies about parents lying to their children—either for the purpose of promoting appropriate behavior or to make them happy.
In one of the studies, many parents reported they told their young children that bad things would happen if they didn't go to bed or eat what they were supposed to. Other parents reported inventing magical creatures. One explained, ?We told our daughter that if she wrapped up all her pacifiers (橡皮奶嘴) like gifts, the fair would come and give them to the children who needed them.”
In the other study, the researchers surveyed college students' recollections about their parents' lying and obtained similar results: parents often lie to their children even as they tell them that lying is unacceptable.
The researchers refer to this practice as “parenting by lying”. “We are surprised by how often parenting by lying takes place,” said LEE. Though Heyman thinks that there are occasions when it is appropriate to be less than truthful with a child, she urges parents to think through the issues and consider alternatives before using lies.
“Children sometimes behave in ways that are disruptive or are likely to harm their longterm interests,” said Heyman. “It is common for them to try out a range of strategies, including lying, to stop them.
However, parents should be concerned about the possible longterm negative consequences to children's beliefs about honesty.”

【2016模拟题】 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
Winter Vinecki began running at age five, but got serious in 2015 after her father died of cancer — that’s when she decided to honor his memory by running a marathon on every continent before her 15th birthday.
Scope: Team Winter is an organization you founded to raise money for cancer research. How did it get started?
Winter: At first, Team Winter was formed to fight childhood obesity. When I was 8, I ran a race and raised $1,100 for that cause. But less than a year later, my dad got cancer. I knew I had to do something to help. When I started, my goal was to raise $10,000. I’ve raised well past that — almost $500,000.
Scope: What goes through your mind when you run?
Winter: When I’m having a hard time during a race, I think about my dad. If he could deal with the pain of cancer, I can deal with any type of pain. He was a very friendly person. He was always smiling and very happy even when he had cancer.
Scope: Is your age ever an obstacle in your races?
Winter: I’ve been turned down by race directors who won’t let anyone younger than 16 or 18 compete. But Diana Nyad, the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, told me, “Never let them tell you it can’t be done.” From then on I knew my age wasn’t the problem.
Scope: You’ve probably inspired lots of people too.
Winter: I’ve heard about kids doing projects like me. Once in a restaurant, a boy came up to my mom and me and told us his dad had cancer too. Now he’s competing in running for his dad. Hearing stories like that helps keep me going.
1. What do we know about Team Winter?
A. It always holds different races.
B. Its final goal is to raise $500,000.
C. It was named after Winter’s father.
D. It was to help obese children at first.
2. When Winter has a hard time during a race, what keeps her going?
A. Her father’s illness.
B. Her father’s success.
C. Her father’s bravery.
D. Her father’s kindness.
3. Winter’s words in the last paragraph tell us that _____.
A. she sets a good example for others
B. she hopes others will do what she does
C. the boy wants to join Team Winter
D. the boy invites her to compete with him
(个人情况)本文是应用文。文章是对15岁马拉松选手Winter Vinecki的访谈。
. D。细节理解题。根据第一部分问答的At first, Team Winter was formed to fight childhood obesity可知,Winter创建Team Winter的最初目的是为肥胖儿童筹集善款。
2. C。推理判断题。根据第二部分问答可知,如果Winter在比赛中遇到困难,她会想到父亲总是微笑地面对病痛。故正是父亲在病痛面前表现出的勇敢让Winter在困境中继续前进。
. A。推理判断题。从最后一部分问答的kids doing projects like me以及男孩为帮助父亲参加比赛的举动可知,Winter为他人树立了良好的榜样。, 从给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D) 中, 选出最佳选项。

“Croeso I Gymru!” If you don't know what this means, read on to find out more.
When you cross over the border from England into Wales, you don't have to show your passport but you do notice a difference immediately. All the road markings and signs are shown in two languages—English and Welsh (威尔士语). Not all visitors to Britain know that other languages are spoken here. There's the Gaelic (盖尔语) language in Scotland and a few people speak Cornish (康沃尔语) in the southwest of England, but the most widely spoken language in the UK besides English is Welsh.
Perhaps the first Welsh word you'll see on the road into Wales is ARAF. There's a helpful English translation next to it—SLOW. As you can see, Welsh looks quite different from English. It sounds very different, too. Welsh looks and sounds so different from English because it's a Celtic language. Celtic cultures still exist around the edges of the UK—in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and also in parts of France. For hundreds of years, almost everyone in Wales spoke Welsh, but nowadays there are about 600 thousand Welsh speakers—around 20% of the population.
So is Welsh dying out? Not at all! Nowadays, all school children in Wales study Welsh and many choose to go to an all Welshspeaking school. You can get public information in Welsh, speak Welsh in court or take a course at university in Welsh. People surf the Internet in Welsh, keep up with friends on Facebook and write blogs in Welsh.
By the way,“Croeso I Gymru!” means “Welcome to Wales!” —I hope you'll be able to visit it
one day.

Here’s a movie—a sharp, sugar-rush of fun that’s guaranteed to entertain the entire family. With some terrific computer-generated effects, a great cast and a fun-packed storyline, Robots is the best animated film (动画片) since The Incredibles. Yep, it really is that good. Set in a world populated by robots, Ewan McGregor plays Rodney Copperbottom, a young robot who leaves his small-town home to pursue his dream of becoming an inventor. But after arriving in Robot City, his hopes of getting a job at Bigweld Industries are destroyed when he learns the firm has been taken over by the evil Ratchet (Greg Kinnear). Egged on by his controlling mum, Madame Gasket (Jim Broadbent), Ratchet plans to reduce half of Robot City’s citizens to scrap metal by refusing to sell the spare parts they need to survive. Instead, he wants to make a fortune selling expensive upgrades that few can afford. As he says, “Why be you when you can be new?” Aided by a few misfit robots known as the Rustles—including Robin Williams as the cowardly' (胆小的)Fender (“I’m made of a metal called Afraidium”)—Rodney must track down the firm’s founder, Bigweld (Mel Brooks), and convince him to save the city from Ratchet’s plans. The first thing that’ll strike you about the movie is the thought that's gone into creating Robot City. It’s a wondrous world full of mechanical marvels including wind-up cars and walking streetlamps. Also terrific are the special effects. This might be an animated movie but at times you’ll catch yourself thinking it’s really a live-action film. Of course, there have been plenty of animated movies that looked the part but were let down by a weak storyline (see Shark Tale, for example). But Robots grips (扣人心弦) right from the start thanks to a heart-warming and thoroughly engaging plot that never bores. My only complaints are with Williams who, as usual, has a one-in-10 success rate with his jokes. Also a letdown is a romantic subplot between Rodney and a shapely robot called Cappy (Halle Berry) that doesn’t go anywhere. Complains aside, this is a mechanical marvel that’ll have you bolted firmly to your seat. BEST QUOTE(引述): Fender: “Even though you had a discouraging day, just remember there’s another one coming tomorrow.” BEST BIT: Check out those amazing images.
WORST BIT: Robin Williams, character does an unfunny Britney Spears dance routine. IF YOU LIKED…Ice Age, The Incredibles, Toy Story... YOU’LL LIKE THIS. 1、This piece of writing is a _______.
A.commercial advertisement B.film review
C.movie poster D.literary essay
The cast of Robots is made up of all the following actors or actresses EXCEPT _______.
A.Ewan McGregor B.Robin Williams
C.Britney Spears D.Halle Berry
What is Shark Tale an example of?
A.A great cast. B.A poor plot.
C.Special effects. D.Clumsy animation.

(2017·郑州市二模,B)
It was an autumn morning shortly after my husband and I moved into our first house. Our children were upstairs unpacking, and I was looking out of the window at my father moving around mysteriously on the front lawn. “What are you doing out there?” I called to him.
He looked up, smiling, “I'm making you a surprise.” I thought it could be just about anything. When we were kids, he always created something surprising for us. Today, however, Dad would say no more, and caught up in the business of our new life, I eventually forgot about his surprise.
Until one gloomy day the next March when I glanced out of the window, I saw
a dot of blue across the yard.
I headed outside for a closer look.
They were
crocuses (番红花) throughout the front lawn—blue, yellow and my favorite pink,
with little faces moving up and down in the cold wind. I remembered the things Dad secretly
planted last autumn. He knew how the darkness and dullness of winter always got me down.
What could have been more perfectly timely to my needs?
My father's crocuses bloomed (开花) each spring for the next five seasons, always bringing
the same assurance: Hard times are almost over. Hold on, keep going, and light is coming soon.
Then a spring came with only half the usual blooms and the next spring there were none. I
missed the crocuses, so I would ask Dad to come over and plant new bulbs. But I never did. He
died suddenly one October day. My family were in deep sorrow, leaning on our faith.
On a spring afternoon four years later, I was driving back when I felt depressed. It was
Dad's birthday, and I found myself thinking about him. This was not unusual—my family often
talked about him, remembering how he lived up to his faith. Suddenly I slowed as I turned into
our driveway. I stopped and stared at the lawn. There on the muddy grass with small piles of
melting snow, bravely waving in the wind, was one pink crocus.
How could a flower bloom from a bulb more than 18 years ago, one that hadn't bloomed in
over a decade? But there was the crocus. Tears filled my eyes as I realized its significance.
Hold on, keep going, and light is coming soon. The pink crocus bloomed for only a day, but
it built my faith for a lifetime.
