  【2016模拟题】 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

When I was 8 years old, I decided to run away from home after a quarrel with my mother. With my suitcase packed and some sandwiches in a bag, I started for the front door.

My mom asked where I was going. “I’m leaving home,” I said.

“What’s that you’re carrying?” she asked.

“Some clothes and food,” I replied.

“If you want to run away, that’s all right,” she said. “But you came into this home without anything and you can leave the same way.”

I threw my suitcase and sandwiches on the floor and started for the door again.

“Wait a minute,” Mom said. “You didn’t have any clothes on when you arrived, and I want them back.”

This infuriated me. I tore my clothes off — shoes, socks, underwear and all — and shouted, “Can I go now?”

“Yes,” my mom answered, “but once you close that door, don’t expect to come back.”

I was so angry that I shut the door forcefully and stepped out of my home. Then I noticed down the street two neighbor girls walking toward our house. I was so shy that I saw the big spruce (云杉) tree in our yard and jumped under the low-hanging branches. A pile of dried-up brown needles were beneath the tree, and you can’t imagine the pain those sharp needles caused to my body.

After I was sure the girls had passed by, I ran to the front door and knocked at it loudly.

  “It’s Billy! Let me in!”

The voice behind the door answered, “Billy doesn’t live here anymore. He ran away from home.”

Looking behind me to see if anyone else was coming down the street, I said, “Mom! I’m sorry. I’m still your son. Let me in!”

The door opened and Mom’s smiling face appeared. “Did you change your mind about running away?” she asked.

“What’s for supper?” I smiled back.

阅读理解2017·江西高安中学模拟Mouth bacteria grow fast in airless conditions.Oxygen rich saliva (唾液) keeps their numbers down. When we sleep, for example, the saliva stream slows, and sulfur (硫) producing bacteria gains the upper hand, producing classic “morning breath”.

Alcohol drinking, too much talking, breathing through the mouth during exercise, anything that dries the mouth produces bad breath. So can stress, though it’s not understood why. Some people’s breath turns sour every time they go on a job interview.

Saliva flow gradually slows with age, which explains why the elderly have more bad breath trouble than younger people do.Babies.however,who make plenty of saliva and whose mouths contain relatively few bacteria have characteristically sweet breath.

For most of us,the simple, dry mouth variety of bad breath is easily cured.Eating or drinking starts saliva and sweeps away many of the bacteria.Breakfast often stops morning breath.

Those with constant dry mouth find that it helps to keep gum, hard candy,or a bottle of water or juice around.Brushing the teeth wipes out dry mouth bad breath because it clears away many of the offending bacteria.

Surprisingly, one thing that rarely works is mouthwash. The liquid can mask bad breath smell with its own smell, but the effect lasts no more than an hour. Some mouthwashes claim to kill the bacteria responsible for bad breath. The trouble is,they don’t necessarily reach all offending germs. Most bacteria are well protected from mouthwash under thick layers of mucus (粘液).If the mouthwash contains alcohol—as most do—it can worsen the problem by drying our mouth.

1.Which of the following is right?

A.Saliva flow gradually increases with age.

B.Alcohol drinking does good to bad breath.

C.Mouthwash is not an effective way to bad breath.

D.Mouth bacteria can’t grow fast in airless conditions.

2.Which of the following is mentioned as one of the causes of bad breath?

  A.Tooth trouble. B.Sulfur rich food.

  C.Too much exercise.D.Mental pressure.

3.According to the passage, alcohol has something to do with bad breath mainly because________.

A.it keeps offending bacteria from reproducing

B.its smell adds to bad breath

  C.it kills some helpful bacteria

D.it affects the normal flow of saliva

4.Mouthwashes are not an effective cure for bad breath mainly because________.

A.they can’t mask the bad odor long enough

B.they can’t get to all the offending bacteria

C.their strong smell mixes with bad breath and makes it worse

D.they can’t cover the thick layers of mucus

5.We can infer from this passage that________.

A.offensive breath can’t easily be cured

B.elderly people are less offended by bad breath

C.heavy drinkers are less affected by bad breath

D.offensive breath is less affected by alcohol语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。说明了口气(臭)的原因,虽然有些治疗措施,但是都不能从根本上治愈。

Nothing succeeds like confidence. When you are truly confident, it radiates (辐射 from you like sunlight, and attracts success to you like a magnet (磁铁).Besides, those who are selfconfident can in turn inspire confidence in others: their audience, their peers, their bosses, their customers, and their friends. And gaining the confidence of others is one of the key ways in which a selfconfident person finds success.

So how can we build a sense of self-confidence and prepare ourselves on the way to success?

First, do what you believe to be right, even if others mock or criticize you for it.Believe in yourself and believe that you can do it under any circumstances, because if you believe you can, then you really will. The belief keeps you searching for answers, which means that pretty soon you will get them.

Second, govern your behavior based on what other people think. What's more important, be willing to take risks and go the extra miles to achieve better results, in which case mistakes cannot be avoided.Don't hesitate to admit your mistakes, and learn from them.Next, work hard to settle the problems in order to cover up your mistakes before anyone notices.Building self-confidence is readily achievable, as long as you have the focus and determination to carry things through. And what's even better is that the things you'll do to build self-confidence will also build success—after all, your confidence will come from real, solid achievement. No one can take this away from you!

As you sow, sow will reap. With your perseverance and improvement, you are getting closer to success. At this stage, wait for others to congratulate you on your accomplishments and compliments elegantly.“Thanks, I really worked hard on that success, I'm pleased you recognize my efforts.” The congratulations and compliments from others will promote you to gain further success.

Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, and it is no wonder that so many people struggle to find it.Self-confidence really can be learned and built on.Besides, whether you're working on your own self-confidence or building the confidence of people around you, it's well worth the effort!

After spending 13 years raising three boys, Stephanie Connolly wanted to get back into the workforce, but she was worried that her computer skills were obsolete. Not only was the long employment break a concern, but she had never used Microsoft Office programs. Her last employer had only used WordPerfect.

A year later, Connolly is so skilled in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that she is helping others, and has just completed a fixed amount of work as a teaching assistant in a computer class. She's also on the job hunt, armed with a new resume (简历), interview skills, and the latest knowledge of how to conduct Internet job searches, fill out Webbased applications, and upload resumes.

“I can walk through the doors of the company and feel very confident. The course instructors have given that to me,” said Connolly, who owed her development to classes offered by the Harvard Allston Workforce Development Collaboration (HAWDC).The collaboration is part of a series of programs, and neighborhood improvements that began with an agreement reached between Harvard University and the city of Boston five years ago.

The agreement grew out of discussions

between the University and the city over the construction of Harvard's science Complex in Allston. Although the construction paused in 2009, the implementation (实施) of the nonconstructionrelated aspects of the agreement has continued.

What has meant to the neighbors is the opening of the Harvard Allston Education Portal, a communitycentered education facility that serves as Harvard's front door to the neighborhood and access to certain University programs and facilities.
