As the capital of New South Wales, Sydney is the oldest and the largest city in Australia. Because of its magnificent harbour and important position on the southeast coast of Australia, it is also one of the most important ports in the South Pacific. At the beginning of the 19th century when it was still a small convict(罪犯) settlement, it had already established trade with the Pacific Islands, India, China, South Africa, and America.
The first sight of Sydney, whether from the sea or the air, is always impressive. Built on low hills surrounding a huge harbour with many bays and inlets(水湾), the city is dominated(处于支配地位) by the Sydney Harbour Bridge, one of the biggest single-span bridges in the world, and the Opera House, with its shining white shell-shaped roofs that seem to echo(回声) the sails of the many yachts (帆船) in the harbour.
Because of its history as a great port and its position as the site of the country’s main international air terminal, Sydney is perhaps the only city in Australia with a really international atmosphere. Yet it remains a very Australian city, with a nice compromise(折中) between its British heritage(遗产) and the South Seas attractions of its climate and environment.

Jim Ryun once said, “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”
Our motivation in life reflects the people we are and the choices we make. Motivation starts with desire or interest. But it is habits and integrity that keep people going when times get tough.
Jon Endicott, vice principal, said, “Preparing for study skills is important,” in Mary Kneefel’s article , Emotional Intelligence—key to life on November 15, 2004. “But we also need to look at emotional intelligence.”
“According to psychologists Salovey and Mayer, who coined the term, emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive, understand emotions and regulate emotions to promote emotional and intellectual growth.”
Motivation and emotions are what make people want to grow in school, music, sports, etc.
Kobe Bryant, a NBA basketball star, is one of the world’s best basketball players and the biggest role models. He has a lot of confidence and is not afraid to shoot a basket.
This attitude he has on the basketball court reflects the discipline he places on himself and the motivation he cultivates, so he can obtain that discipline.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second languge can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the earlier people learn a second language, the greater the effect.
A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London (UCL), took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals (通两种语言的人)” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed with the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的).” He said, “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the earlier they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world.” explained the scientists.

A.Grey hair
B.Material of the brain.

D.Difficult situations
14.The experience of learning a second language can ________.
A.change one’s brain completely
B.improve one’s maths skills
C.make one smarter than others
D.increase the ability to learn
15.We learn from the passage that ________.
A.the researchers from UCL did another study in Italy
B.a similar study was done on native Italian speakers who learn English as a second language
C.the research done on the Italians shows a totally different result
D.it will be easier for one to travel around the world by learning a second language
16.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Learning a second language can help improve your brain power.
B.You should learn a second language if English is not your native language.
C.If you want to learn a second language, you should do it at a certain age.
D.The research done by the researchers from UCL is very successful.

The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth, is of great importance to African ecosystem (生态系统).Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat.
It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas . In these open spaces are numerous
plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed planteaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem.
17.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Disappearance of African elephants
B.Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants
C.The effect of African elephants’ search for food
D.The eating habit of African elephants.
18.What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms”most probably mean?
A.Fixing the time
B.Worsening the state
C.Improving the quality
D.Deciding the conditions
19.What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?
A.They result from the destruction of rain forests.
B.They provide food mainly for African elephants.
C.They are home to many endangered animals.
D.They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.
20.The passage is developed mainly by______
A.showing the effect and then explaining the causes
B.pointing out similarities and differences
C.describing the changes in space order
D.giving examples
