Frederic Mishkin, who's been a professor at Columbia Business School for almost 30 years, is good at solving problems and expressing ideas. Whether he's standing in front of a lecture hall or engaged in a casual conversation, his hands are always waving and pointing. When he was in graduate school, one of his professors was so annoyed by this constant gesturing that he made the young economist sit on his hands whenever he visited the professor's office.
It turns out, however, that Mishkin's professor had it exactly wrong. Gesture doesn't prevent but promotes clear thought and speech. Research demonstrates that the movements we make with our hands when we talk form a kind of second language, adding information that's absent from our words. It's learning's secret code: Gesture reveals what we know. It reveals what we don't know. What's more, the agreement (or lack of agreement) between what our voices say and how our hands move offers a clue to our readiness to learn.
Many of the studies establishing the importance of gesture to learning have been conducted by Susan GoldinMeadow, a professor of psychology at the University of Chicago. “We change our minds by moving our hands,” writes GoldinMeadow in a review of this work. Particularly significant are what she calls “mismatches” between oral expression and physical gestures. A student might say that a heavier ball falls faster than a light one, for example, but make a gesture indicating that they fall at the same rate, which is correct. Such differences indicate that we're moving from one level of understanding to another. The thoughts expressed by hand motions are often our newest and most advanced ideas about the problem we're working on; we can't yet absorb these concepts into language, but we can capture them in movement.
GoldinMeadow's more recent work strews not only that gesture shows our readiness to learn, but that it actually helps to bring learning about. It does so in two ways. First, it elicits(引出) helpful behavior from others around us. GoldinMeadow has found that adults respond to children's speechgesture mismatches by adjusting their way of instruction. Parents and teachers apparently receive the signal that children are ready to learn, and they act on it by offering a greater variety of problemsolving techniques. The act of gesturing itself also seems to quicken learning, bringing new knowledge into consciousness and aiding the understanding of new concepts. A 2007 study by Susan Wagner Cook, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Iowa, reported that thirdgraders who were asked to gesture while learning algebra (代数) were nearly three times more likely to remember what they'd learned than classmates who did not gesture.

(2017·济南二月月考)
Our particular parenting style reflects our own way of “looking”. Here's a great piece of writing reflecting parent's particular ways on the parenting style that have become known humorously as helicopter parenting and submarine (潜水艇) parenting.
Helicopter parents hover over their children, managing every aspect of their child's life. On the contrary, submarine parents remain “hidden” coming to the surface when guidance is needed.
While helicopter parents may have the best intentions, in reality, they are raising children with few problem solving skills. Children with hovering parents never get the chance to face disappointment and build up their ability to recover from misfortune.
Think about your typical submarine. Submarines usually remain underwater. In case of a need for emergency surfacing, submarines can rise so quickly they are driven partially out of the water. Submarine parents also remain out of sight, yet able to pop up in the case of an emergency.
I admit I'm a submarine mom. My job as a parent is to have fun with my daughters while letting them explore and learn natural consequences.
My older daughter found herself acting in commercials and making more than minimum wage as a teen. To give her a sense of the real world, I insisted she spend three weeks every summer, picking strawberries and earning $3.50 on a good day.
When my youngest daughter Sondra was six, she wanted a very expensive American Girl Doll. I cut the full color 18“ picture out of the American Girl catalogue and had it laminated (压膜). “Here's your American Girl Doll.” I said “When you turn nine, I'll buy you the 3D doll on your birthday.” Sondra played with her flat doll for months, making clothes and furniture for her. She learned creativity. I saved $88.00.

When most people think of giant pandas, the pictures of the cute, blackandwhite bears from China that eat bamboo will immediately jump into their mind. Scientists from Mississippi State University, however, are interested in what the bears leave behind: their poop(排泄物). At a recent meeting in Denver, Professor Brown at the university presented her research showing how panda poop could inspire a new way to obtain energy from plants, which are a renewable energy source. Usually, plants can be called biomass(有机燃料) when they are used as an energy source.
Burning biomass is one way to capture its energy, but Brown hopes panda poop can teach scientists something about breaking down biomass. Pandas—or at least the bacteria in their stomachs—are very good at getting energy out of bamboo. Unlike cows, which use 4 stomachs to digest large amounts of grass, a panda has only one stomach. Bamboo comes in, and poop goes out.
Every day for 14 months, Brown and her team on this project, counted the bacteria in the poop of the two pandas, YaYa and LeLe living at the Memphis Zoo. Her studies turned up 12 species of bacteria that break down biomass, including one that had never been found in pandas. Brown says that because the poop contains bacteria that break down biomass, it could also be used to break down other types of biomass.
Now the scientists hope to identify the chemicals that help with the process of breaking down biomass and then figure out how the bacteria work. If those chemicals can be made in the lab, they could be used to turn biomass—like grass or other plants—into fuel.
Brown says she doesn't mind handling panda poop. “It's probably the most pleasant material to work with,” she says, “My colleagues and I have been working with other poop for a long time, and we can assure you it has a fairly pleasant smell associated with it.”
67.The importance of studying panda poop is________.
A. to create a renewable energy from plants
B. to explore a new way to get energy from plants
C. to learn a lesson of energy from panda poop
D. to figure out how the bacteria work for us mankind
答案:B 细节理解题。由第一段第三句话“At a recent meeting in Denver, Professor Brown at the university presented her research showing how panda poop could inspire a new way to obtain energy from plants...”可知,研究大熊猫粪便的重要性在于,它能为我们从植物中提取能量提供新路。
68.The process of the panda poop project can be described as________.
a.Identify the chemicals helpful to break down biomass.
b.Find the bacteria in panda poop which break down bamboo.
c.Reproduce the chemicals in the lab to turn biomass into energy.
d.Analyze how the bacteria in panda poop work in panda's stomach.
A. a, b, d, c
B. a, d, c, b
C. b, a, d, c
D. b, d, a, c
69.What does the author mainly want to express in the 2nd paragraph?
A.Pandas don't digest bamboo the same way as cows.
B.Pandas are capable of getting energy using stomachs.
C.Pandas can get energy from bamboo more efficiently.
D.Scientists have learnt something new from panda poop.
答案:C 推理判断题。第二段第二句话“Pandas—or at least the bacteria in their stomachs—are very good at getting energy out of bamboo.”是该段的中心句。
70.What does Professor Brown think of working with panda poop?
A. Sick
B. Challenging
C. Inspiring
D. Enjoyable
答案:D 推理判断题。由最后一段的用词“doesn't mind”和“pleasant”可知,布朗教授对于该项工作感觉很享受。

When you see homework covering the kitchen table and toys are piling up around the sofa, you probably wish there was a bit more space. You are not alone. Nearly a third of parents say they feel squeezed into their homes but cannot afford to move to a bigger property,a report reveals today.
Twentynine percent say “their property is too small to fit the size of their family”—rising to 40 percent for those 34 and under. One in four children is “forced to share” a bedroom, according to the FindaProperty. Com website. Property analyst Samantha Baden said:“Affordability remains a key issue for families, with the average cost of a threebedroom home around £ 193,000.”Very few can afford to buy—or to rent—a property of the size they want and in the area they desire to live in, according to Miss Baden.
A recent report, from investment firm LV, also found that many “spacestarved parents” are pushed into a twobedroom home which was perfect when they were a young couple, but has no space for three or so children. Grownup children who cannot afford to leave home are also adding to the problem facing families in Britain's “big squeeze”.
For a home to be the correct size, which means it is not overcrowded, parents must have their own bedroom. Children under ten can share, as well as samesex children between ten and 20. Anyone over 21 also needs their own room.
The report comes as official figures, published yesterday by the Land Registry, revealing house prices are falling sharply in every region except London. The worsthit area is the North East, where average house prices have fallen to below £ l00,000 for the first time in seven years. However, they remain unaffordable for millions.

答案:A 推理判断题。根据第二段最后两句话“Affordability remains a key issue for families, with the average cost of a threebedroom home around £ 193,000.Very few can afford to buy—or to rent—a property of the size they want and in the area they desire to live in...”可知,大多数家庭买不起他们想要的大房子,支付能力仍然是最关键的问题。
