WHO calls for global implementation on tobacco control
Thursday marks the 25th World No Tobacco Day. This year's theme is "Tobacco Industry Interference."
The campaign will focus on the need to expose and counter the tobacco industry's attempts to undermine the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
WHO figures show the global tobacco epidemic kills nearly 6 million people each year, of which more than 600 thousand are people exposed to second hand smoke.
The WHO fears that without action the number will jump to 8 million by 2030. Of those, more than 80 percent will live in low and middle income countries.
At the same time, the WHO is also calling for global implementation on tobacco control. So far, 31 countries have set up laws that ban indoor smoking.
