If you want to help children develop language and speech skills, UCLA researchers say, listening to what they have to say is just as important as talking to them.

The effect of a conversation between a child and an adult is about six times as great as the effect of adult speech input alone, the researchers found. “Adults speaking to children helps language develop, but what matters much more is the interaction,” said the study’ s lead author, Frederick Zimmerman, an associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles. The researchers also found that TV viewing didn’ t have much of an effect — positively or negatively — as long as it wasn’ t displacing conversations between an adult and a child.

The UCLA study included 275 families with children between 2 months and 48 months old. They represented a variety of incomes and education. The researchers found that, in an average day, children hear about 13,000 spoken words from adults and participated in about 400 adultchild conversations a day.

Assessed separately, factors positively associated with language development included each additional 100 conversations a day and each 1,000 word increase in the number of words spoken by adults and heard by children. When looked at alone, TV was negatively associated with language development. But, when the three factors were analyzed together, the only one that stood out was conversation between adults and children.

“The more a child speaks and interacts with an adult, the better idea a parent has about where the child is,” Zimmerman said. “Although it’ s mostly done unconsciously, parents will provide feedback and correct mistakes. They’ll also tailor their speech to the child. Parents can give a child words by talking to them about what they’ re doing, such as,‘I’m putting on your pajamas now’. But give your child the opportunity to talk, hopefully without the rest of the noise in the environment,” she added. “If parents can carve out some conversation time — maybe at bath time or at dinner time — that’ s a wonderful thing.”

46.The researchers also found that TV viewing ________.

   A. could have a positive effect on a child’s language development

   B. had a little effect on a child’ s language development

   C. affected a child’s language development more negatively than positively

   D. affected a child’s language development both negatively and positively

47.Frederick Zimmerman would probably agree that ________.

   A. parents should let their children talk most of the time

   B. children should watch TV programs selectively

   C. the conversation between parents and children should be two way

   D. it’ s no good for parents to correct their children’ s mistakes when they are speaking

48.We can conclude from the last paragraph that ________.

   A. parents should let a child repeat what he or she says

   B. bath time or dinner time is the best chance for parents to talk to a child

   C. parent-child conversation can be carried out at any proper time

   D. parents should leave a child talking alone

49.What would be the best title for the passage?

   A. Talk with kids, not at them

   B. Let your children voice their own opinions

   C. How to develop a child’ s language ability

   D. The importance of early child language development

50.The underlined word “tailor” in the last paragraph can be best replaced by ________.

  A. control

  B. improve

  C. pass

  D. adjust

A house in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii has collapsed, raising concerns about whether Italy is spending enough to preserve its archaeological heritage.

The House of the Gladiators(角斗士) was found in ruins when the person who was in charge

came to open the site to visitors early on Saturday. Partially rebuilt after it suffered damage during World War II, it had not been thought at risk of collapse. Culture Minister Sandro Bondi said some of the pictures painted on the house's lower walls might have survived. He said that the collapse showed the need for 揳dequatea resources?to keep Italy抯 揺xtremely great historic artistic heritage?in good condition. Italian President Giorgio Napolitano said it was 揳 shame for Italy? Antonio Varone, director of excavationsived. (挖掘)at the site, said officials were “trying to preserve the last small parts and pieces” of the building.

The house, which is not normally open to the public but can be viewed from the outside, was cordoned off after the collapse, and visitors can’t get close to it. There was speculation(推测)that recent heavy rains might have made the building which is thousands of years old fall, but no one was true.

Pompeii was destroyed in AD79 when a volcanic eruption from nearby Mount Vesuvius buried the city in ash. It was not uncovered until the 18th Century. The house, known as the Schola Armaturarum, was used by gladiators for training before fights in the nearby amphitheatre, a circular building without a roof and with rows of seats that rose in steps around an open space.

Tsao Cevoli, president of Italy’s National Association of Archaeologists, called the collapse “an irreparable wound which is too serious to repair to the world’s most important archaeological site”. Extra funds were made available two years ago, and special measures were put in place, to improve conservation at Pompeii, but critics said the plan was badly managed.

  51. The underlined part “cordoned off” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.

  A. dug up by sb. or sth.

  B. surrounded by sb. or sth.

  C. rebuilt by sb.

  C. put off by sth.

  52. Which of the following is TRUE about the collapsed house in Pompeii?

  A. The house was rebuilt during World War Two.

  B. The house has no pictures on its walls.

  C. The house was used for training before it collapsed.

  D. The house was buried in Volcanic ash for many years.

  53. The reason why the house collapsed may be that _______.

  A. it suffered great damage in a war

   B. it had rained heavily in the days before it collapsed

  C. extra funds were not available for the protection of the house

  D. no special measures were put forward to protect the house

  54. Where can we most probably find the passage?

  B. In a book report

   C. In a geography book

  D. In a traveling handbook
