　　1. were plunged into a dire suffering

　　本题考查考生基本词汇量和短语的掌握情况。水深火热在英文中没有一个对等词，所以要采用意译法。可以接受的译法有：a dire suffering，an abyss of suffering，extreme misery。Be plunged into表示使......陷入，使......遭受，如：plunge a country into war;plunge sb. into deep sorrow。另外，前半句中careworn意为受折磨的，饱经忧患的。

　　2. theory be combined with practice

　　be combined with...是固定搭配，意为与......相结合。Be connected with是指将......连起来，在含义上有所差别。其次，句首用了We think it most important that句型，暗示从句要用虚拟语气，should可以省略。

　　3. Rain or shine

　　本题考查固定用法不论......，英语用...or...来表达。如：Winter or summer，that lady always wears a long black gown.类似的表达还有：better or worse，good or evil，sink or swim，men or women，old or young。

　　4. no other than the man

　　本题考查采用反译法翻译，以加强语气，取得较好的修辞效果。No other than强调了那个人就是我们要找的。这句话也可以译成This is just the man we are looking for，但强调的语气就显得要弱一些。此外，no other than要和other than区别开来。如：Theres nobody here other than me.

　　5. three to five times that of ordinary households

　　本题考查数的表达。考生要学会用倍数+the size of...，...倍数+that of ...的句型进行倍数的表达。Household是个集合词，表示家庭，如：average household;multiperson household;peasant household。家务叫做household affairs。
