  [2012南昌模拟]

Would you eat a ready meal from the fridge rather than cook from scratch? Have you been doing Internet shopping rather than going to the stores? What can’t you be bothered to do?

A study into how lazy British people are has found more than half of adults are so lazy that they’d catch the lift rather than climb two flights of stairs.

Just over 2, 000 people were quizzed by independent researchers at Nuffield Health, Britain’s largest health charity. The results were astonishing.

About one in six people surveyed said if their remote control was broken, they would continue watching the same channel rather than get up.

More than one third of those questioned said they would not run to catch a bus. Worryingly, of the 654 respondents with children, 64% said they were often too tired to play with them.

This led the report to conclude that it’s no wonder that one in six children in the UK are classified as obese (very fat) before they start school.

Dr Sarah Dauncey, medical director of Nuffield Health, said, “People need to get fitter, not just for their own sake, but for the sake of their families, friends and evidently their pets, too.

“If we don’t start to take control of this problem, a whole generation will become too unfit to perform even the most rudimentary of tasks. ”

And Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, was shamed as the most inactive city in the UK, with 75% surveyed admitting they do not get enough exercise, followed closely by Birmingham and Southampton, both with 67%.

The results cause serious challenges for the National Health Service, where obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer have been on a steady increase for the past 40 years and are costing billions of pounds every year.

  60. What causes children in the UK to be obese?

  A. Eating ready meal.

  C. Doing Internet shopping.

  D. Being lazy.

  61. What can be inferred from the passage?

  A. British people are too lazy to do anything.

  B. Internet shopping will do harm to your health.

  C. Many people would not run to catch a bus in Britain.

  D. People should be more active and take regular exercise to keep fit.

  62. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

  A. One sixth of British people use remote control when watching TV.

  B. People will benefit not only themselves but their families by getting fit.

  D. More people get obesity-related illnesses now than 40 years ago.

  63. What does the underlined word “rudimentary” most probably mean?

  A. basic

From now on, never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.

The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created:the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success only if you make the right choice.

You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem. Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the perennial(长期的) victims and martyrs. They are leaves tossed(摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.

You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.

Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence.

If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks.

In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible, once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.

  68. People with low self-esteem are compared to leaves because they ____.

  A. are ready to change their minds

  B. are easily affected by windy weather

  C. don’t have the power to face their fate

  D. can’t exercise control over themselves

  69. It can be inferred from Paragraph 5 that ____.

  A. whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes

  B. developing confidence is the key to future success

  C. thoughts and beliefs are the results of creative mind

  D. setting our expectations is essential before taking action

  70. The last paragraph serves as ____.

  A. the proof of the author’s points

  B. the conclusion of the argument

  C. an introduction to another topic

  D. a comparison between two views

  71. Which is the best title for the text?

  A. Success is a choice

  B. The secrets of success

Invention is a creative process. An open and curious mind enables one to see beyond what is known. Seeing a new possibility, a new connection or relationship can spark(引发) an invention. Inventive thinking frequently involves combining concepts or elements from different fields that would not normally be put together. Sometimes inventors skip over the boundaries among separate fields. Ways of thinking, materials, processes or tools from one field are used as no one else has imagined in a different field.

Play can lead to invention. Childhood curiosity like playing in a sand box, imagination can develop one’s play nature—an inner need according to Carl Jung. Inventors feel the need to play with things that interest them, and to explore, and this internal drive brings about interesting creations.

Inventing can also be an obsession(痴迷). Inventors often imagine a new idea, seeing it in their mind’s eye. New ideas can arise when the conscious mind turns away from the subject or problem; or when the focus is on something else; or even while relaxing or sleeping. An unusual idea may come all of a sudden! For example, after years of working to figure out the general theory of relativity, the solution came to Einstein suddenly in a dream “like a giant die making an unforgettable impress, a huge map of the universe summarized itself in one clear vision”.

Invention can also be accidental. Insight(洞察力) is also an important element of invention. It may begin with questions or doubts. It may begin by recognizing something unusual. It may be useful and it could open a new way for exploration. For example, the odd metallic color of plastic made by accidentally adding too much catalyst(催化剂) led scientists to explore its metal-like properties(性能). They then invented electrically conductive plastic and light emitting(散发) plastic—an invention that won the Nobel Prize in 2000 and has led to a new kind of lighting, display screens, wallpaper and much more.

  (Text 4)

M: ④Did you manage to get through to the States?

W: ④They’re on the phone right now. Line two in your office.

  (Text 5)

W: Are you overweight or slim?

M: ⑤I used to be fat, but since I went on that wonderful diet, I can proudly say I’m. . .

  (Text 6)

M: Oh, I love it. ⑥It’s definitely my favorite place in New York.

W: Yeah? I’ve always thought it was just somewhere to catch a train.

M: No way! Have you ever been inside?

W: No, I’ve just seen it from the outside.

M: You really should. It has got that famous clock that everyone wants to meet under in the movies. ⑦But the best thing is the ceiling.

  W: The ceiling? Why?

M: Oh, ⑧it’s painted so it looks just like the sky at night. It’s beautiful.

W: Really? It’s probably the only time you can see the stars in New York City.

  (Text 7)

W: ⑨Let me just read that back to you.

  M: OK.

W: ⑭Miles Everson a millionaire? Who would have believed it!

  (Text 9)

M: So, what sort of person are we looking for?

W: Oh, well, they’d have to be reliable, of course. I don’t want to find that we are about to go out and they haven’t shown up, or they are running late or something.

M: Oh, yeah, of course. That last kid—what was her name? She. . .

W: Oh, please, ⑰she was always late, but you have to admit ⑯she was a hard worker—always cleaned the house while we were out.

M: Well, ⑯that’s not so important as far as I’m concerned. ⑮I mean they are being paid to look after the kids. If they clean the place up it’s a bonus, but. . .

W: But, no. . . we need to be able to trust them, of course—I mean, leaving them here in the house with the kids, you know. . .

M: Oh, yeah. Honesty is definitely important.

W: Oh, but also they have to be friendly. It’s no good if the kids don’t like them.

M: True. So, who should we interview, then?

  (Text 10)

The Internet is often described as the World Wide Web but how truly global is it when millions of users have no choice but to use a Latinbased alphabet to name websites and email addresses? All of that is set to change following the decision taken by the Internet regulator organization to allow domain names to be in nonLatin scripts.

⑱The new naming system means that websites will no longer have to include suffixes such as. com, . co, . uk, or. cn written in English. Instead complete web addresses will be possible in languages such as Chinese, Arabic or Korean for the first time.

These new Internationalized Domain Names will come online next year, ⑲and may prove very popular since more than half of the 1. 6 billion people who use the Internet speak languages that do not use the alphabet.

Many think the move is necessary and the morally correct thing to do. Not only is it an issue of convenience, but it’s an issue of what’s right, the right to express their names in their own cultural language.

The change to the naming system is not without opposition, however. Some have said that the new approach could lead to the separation of some online communities operating only within their languages from the rest of the web.

⑳Others have claimed that it will make protection of intellectual property rights even harder than it already is.

  书面表达【参考范文】

  Always Be Grateful

As is known to all, it is one of the Chinese traditional virtues to be grateful to whoever has been kind and helpful to us.

In my opinion, our gratitude should first go to our parents because they not only provide us with food and clothing but also care for us in many ways. They are always willing to do whatever they can to ensure our happiness. Second, we should thank the teachers who are making every effort to give us wisdom and knowledge and help us become useful persons.

As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words. Therefore, we should devote ourselves to studying so that we can live up to their expectations. It’s also important to express our gratitude whenever we get help from them.

In short, we should strengthen our sense of gratitude and take action to repay their love and kindness.
