The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross the busy road without getting flattened by passing cars.

The original bridge was built over Olympia Way on the west edge of the library grounds. Before the bridge was built, squirrels had to avoid traffic to and from the Park Plaza office building where office staff put out a nutty feast for the squirrels. Many times,

Peters and others who worked in and near Park Plaza witnessed squirrels being run over.

One day Peters found a dead squirrel with a nut still in its mouth, and that day's coffee break discussion turned into squirrel safety. The group of businessmen cooked up the squirrel bridge idea and formed a committee to ask the blessing of the City Council(市政会). The Council approved, and Councilwoman Bess LaRiviere jokingly named the bridge “Nutty Narrows”.

After architects designed the bridge, Amos Peters and Bill Hutch started construction. They built the 60foot bridge from aluminum and lengths of fire hose(消防水带). It cost $1,000.ts of squirrels using the bridge started. Squirrels were even seen guiding their young and teaching_them_the_ropes. The story was picked up by the media, and Nutty Narrows became known in newspapers all over the world.

One day Li Ping was riding fast when she suddenly saw an old woman before her. But it was too late to stop immediately. The old woman was knocked down. Li Pin didn't help her. Instead, she scolded her and rode away.

When Li Ping stopped her bicycle, she was surprised to find her new shoes missing. She hurried back and found the old woman there holding her shoes in her hands. She was sorry for what she had done and apologized to the woman.

From this, I learned everybody should be kind to each other. Never do as Li Pin did to the old, or you will feel greatly sorry.

阅读理解Each new school year brings fresh reminders of what educators call the summer learning gap. Some call it the summer learning setback.Put simply,it means the longer kids are out of school, the more they forget. The only thing they might gain is weight.Recent studies show that children gain weight more quickly in the summer vacation than when they are in school.

Most American schools follow a traditional ninemonth calendar.Students get winter and spring breaks and about ten weeks of summer vacation. Some schools follow a yearround calendar. They hold classes for about eight weeks at a time, with a few weeks off in between. But many experts point out that the number of class days in a yearround school is generally the same as in a traditional school.

Last year,a study at Ohio State University reported that yearround students did not learn any more than other students.Lead researcher Paul von Hippel said “yearround schools don’t really solve the problem of the summer learning setback. They simply spread it out across the year”.

Across the country, the research shows that students from poor families fall farther behind over the summer vacation than other students.Experts say this can be prevented. They note that many schools and local governments offer the programs that can help.

But calling them “summer schools” could be a problem. The director of the summer learning center at Johns Hopkins,Ron Fairchild, recently wrote about this issue on his blog.

He said that in American culture, the idea of the summer vacation is connected to the beliefs about freedom and the joys of childhood. He said a research on groups of different parents in Chicago and Baltimore found that almost all strongly disliked the term summer school. They said it created an image of children being forced to do work they missed during the school year.
