课时作业(三十五) [选修7 Unit 5 Travelling abroad]45分钟)阅读理解[2012·北京卷] I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes.Confused, I glanced toward my stonefaced teacher.Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself.“What could be causing everyone to act this way?”

Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington.Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America.I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant.I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice:flip(掷) a coin.Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails, my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.

Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost.Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear, “My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.”The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?

Obviously, my grade was awful.Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around.I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No redos; no new grade.I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance.Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year.Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster's office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation.I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my option to skip the sixth grade.Justice is sweet!

由文章第一段第一句中的“…only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes.” 由第二段“Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country,I had never heard of that name before.” 由最后一段“Consequently,I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year.” 根据第四段的第二句“But due to the city planning,it has to move.” : harmonious family

A harmonious family is essential to our personal development and our physical and mental health. A harmonious family is always full of warmth, love and laughter. Parents and children love and show concern for each other. They also respect and understand each other. If a child grows up in a harmonious family, he is more likely to be cheerful and optimistic. Otherwise, he may be miserable and pessimistic. Meanwhile, parents in a harmonious family are sure to live happily and more healthily.

Since a harmonious family plays a very important role in our life, it is up to every family member to contribute to the building of such a family. First of all, parents should be a role model for their children and pay more attention to their own words and behavior. Besides, they must trust their children and often communicate with them.

As children of the family, we should also respect and understand our parents, and try to share their burdens. If we do so, our home will always be harmonious.

课后阅读--------A skeleton in the cupboard  “家丑”

We often read in novels how a seemingly respectable person or family has some terrible secret which has been concealed from strangers for years. The English language possesses a vivid saying to describe this sort of situation. The terrible secret is called ‘a skeleton in the cupboard’. At some dramatic moment in the story, the terrible secret becomes known and a reputation is ruined. The reader's hair stands on end when he reads in the final pages of the novel that the heroine, a dear old lady who had always been so kind to everybody, had, in her youth, poisoned every one of her five husbands.

It is all very well for such things to occur in fiction. To varying degrees, we all have secrets which we do not want even our closest friends to learn, but few of us have skeletons in the cupboard. The only person I know who has a skeleton in the cupboard is George Carlton, and he is very proud of the fact. George studied medicine in his youth. Instead of becoming a doctor, however, he became a successful writer of detective stories. I once spent an uncomfortable weekend which I shall never forget at his house. George showed me to the guest-room which, he said, was rarely used. He told me to unpack my things and then come down to dinner. After I had stacked my shirts and underclothes in two empty drawers, I decided to hang one of the two suits I had brought with me in the cupboard. I opened the cupboard door and then stood in front of it petrified. A skeleton was dangling before my eyes. The sudden movement of the door made it sway slightly and it gave me the impression that it was about to leap out at me. Dropping my suit, I dashed downstairs to tell George. This was worse than ‘a terrible secret’; this was a real skeleton! But George was unsympathetic. ‘Oh, that,’ he said with a smile as if he were talking about an old friend. ‘That's Sebastian. You forget that I was a medical student once upon a time. ’

I am a Senior 3 student.I often quarrel with my mother over whether I can watch TV after school. My mother holds the view that students in Senior 3,heavily burdened with their studies, are too busy to spare any time to watch TV.It seems to her that once I am allowed to do that I will not be able to control myself and forget all about my study. She also thinks that it is bad for my eyes to watch TV too often. But I really can’t accept her ideas.I think it is relaxing to watch TV after a day’s hard work. Not only can it set my mind at rest, but it can broaden my horizons. Now we have at last reached an agreement that I can only watch TV at weekends, and the programs should be limited to news, entertainment, sports or science.
