Facebook said the top 10 moments of 2016 were measured by how frequent the topic was mentioned on Facebook posts between January 1 and November 27, 2016.

"Mentions were analyzed in an aggregated, anonymized way and then ranked to create a snapshot of the year on Facebook," the social media giant said.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg described 2016 as a "difficult year for a lot of people around the world."
