The last place team in the New Brazilian Basketball league (NBB), Saldanha da Gama beat firstplace Universo on Sunday by the score of 76-75.
As a result of the loss, Universo fell from first place for thefirst time in the 2009-2010 season.
Universo led throughout the first three quarters of the game. At the end of the third quarter, Universo had a 12 point lead. However, on their home court, Saldanha da Gama won the fourth quarter and the game.
With only 2 seconds remaining in the game, Saldanha da Gama’s Roberto nailed the game-winning field goal, giving his team a 1 point lead.
Universo’s Guilherme led all scorers with 20 points. Arthur and Valtinho added with 13 points each for Universo. However, the bench play of Saldanha de Gama was stronger than Universo’s, leading to an upset victory that was detrimental to Universo’s moral.
As a result of the loss, Universo fell to second place with 39 points after 22 rounds of play. Saldanha da Gama remains in 14th and last place with 27 points.
