充满劳动气息的美语:榔头凿子全都上

有人说，东方人崇尚劳心，西方人崇尚劳力。这种说法的准确性且不讨论。我倒是觉得许多美国人的确喜欢鼓捣东西。不少人家里都有一个小车间、小木工房等。这种习惯在语言中也有所表现。比如，nuts andb olts(螺帽螺栓)就常被用来表示具体细节，最基本的东西;最起码的组成部分。

我们常听到这样的说法：1.The leadership often sets up lofty goals without specifying the nuts and bolts of how they are to be achieved.

领导层常提出宏伟的目标，但没有指出如何达到这些目标的具体细节。

2.In class I can only address some theoretical issues.This afternoon in the lab well deal with the nuts and bolts.课上我只讲些理论问题。具体细节下午到实验室再说。

同样，还有一些来源于劳动生活的词，比如，hammer，chisel等，也常常出现在日常用语里。Hammer是榔头、锤子的意思，它的动词形式(用榔头敲)和名词形式一样。Hammer经常用来形容反复推敲，通过不懈努力制作

比如1.After much consideration，the committee hammered out a restoration plan.

经过慎重考虑，委员会通过努力制定出一个重建方案。

2.Finally they were able to hammer out a peace agreement.

最后他们通过努力终于搞出了一个和平协议。

当然，如果说某人遭到榔头敲打，意思就是这个人受到批评或责难。例如：She was hammered pretty hard in her last evaluation.上次考评时，她受到不少批评。

Chisel是凿子的意思。跟hammer一样，也可直接当动词，表示一点一点完成。例如：Though Mr.Xiao knew translating Ulysses is a bigproject，he believed with determination that he could get it done by chiseling away at it.萧先生知道翻译《尤里西斯》是个大工程，但他认为，只要有恒心，他一点一点攻克，一定能完成。
