Some people think that vertical City is the best, where people live and work in tall buildings. Others think that horizontal City is better, where there are few tall buildings. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Such is human to settle down in ones favorite city. The construction style of diverse cities might satisfy different tastes of people. Perhaps no issue has led to such an endless debate as to whether or not residing in a city with tall buildings outshines living in the counterpart with small houses. This essay aims to prove that compared with the life in small buildings, to live and work in larger skyscrapers enjoys more visible merits 解析: 1. outshine v胜过 2. counterpart n 相对于的人或者物 3. perhaps no issue has led to such an endless debate as to whether or not 也许没有什么像是否一样引起人们的争议 4. reside in sp = live in sp = dwell in sp v居住于某地 5. enjoys more visible merits v 的优势明显 二段:正方观点的展开 As an advocate of living in vertical city, my justifications are not far to seek. The most obvious advantage of living and working in tall buildings is that peoples health can be better ensured. In other words, residents or workers could, to some extent, stay away from the agonies brought about by city noise or air contamination. Another merit coming from undertaking a job or inhabiting in vertical city is that people might have a merry mood. By that I mean, the employees can feast their eyes on the city landscape from those tall buildings when they need to have a relaxation. Meanwhile, residents can enjoy plenty of sunshine if they live in lofty constructions. To make the final point, as far as the city development is concerned, tall buildings will have a major part to play in reducing the pressure of housing shortage and meeting the requirement of population explosion. After all, those small buildings never fail to occupy the precious and limited land resources 解析: 1. stay away from the agonies brought about by v远离由带来的苦恼 2. live in lofty constructions v居住于高层建筑 3. In other words = by that I mean v换言之 4. never fail to occupy the precious and limited land resources v一直占用宝贵的有限的土地资源 5. feast their eyes on the city landscape v尽情欣赏城市的景色 三段:反方观点: Some people, however, might take a skeptical attitude towards my stand. Some people might argue that horizontal city is a superior option for both citys future and individual well-being. Another argument might be supported by some people is that tall buildings are not universally suitable for all cities, especially for those underdeveloped towns because tall buildings fail to synchronize with the proportion of population and the financial budget of the local government. Still, I have to concede that small constructions are never without their merits. As for the old, living in skyscrapers might create real inconvenience for them. At the same time, working in high buildings sometimes makes it hard to escape if some uncertainties, for example, earthquake or fire occurs. 解析: 1. take a skeptical attitude towards my stand v对于我的立场持有怀疑的意见 2. is a superior option v是更好的选择 3. are not universally suitable for v不是普遍适合 4. fail to synchronize with the proportion of population and the financial budget of local government v未能和城市人口比例以及地方政府的财政预算保持一致 5. might create real inconvenience for v给造成真正的不便 6. some uncertainties n一些不确定的事情
