1) Describe the picture briefly
2) Explain/interpret its meaning/example
3) Give your comments
From the information given in the cartoon above, we can see clearly that two daughters
pretend to look after their mother. On the one hand, the mother is nervous because she does not
know where she should live. On the other hand, the purpose of two daughters is to obtain their
mothers money in her pockets.
The painter/drawer/cartoonist tries to inform us that we are supposed to take care of
our parents and we do this with no thought of gain for ourselves. Actually, the fact that two
daughters attempt to care for their mother indicates that lots of young people would like to have
their parents possessions by doing the same thing. Because some of the adolescents wish to
obtain the fortune easily and rapidly, they often choose the way of relying on their parents. For
example, reports can be easily found in the newspapers and magazines that some young
people deny the responsibility for supporting the old parents when they inherit their money.
How to take care of the old parents has become a hotly debated topic in recent years. As
a young man, we are supposed to make money on our own and what we should bear in mind
is that supporting the old parents is a traditional Chinese virtue.

1991 年6 月Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition of no less
than 100 words on Changes in Peoples Diet. Study the following table carefully and your
composition must be based on the information given in the table. Write three paragraphs to:
1.state the changes in peoples diet in the past five years;
2. give possible reasons for the changes.
3. draw your own conclusions.
You should quote as few figures as possible.
As can be seen from the chart, great changes have taken place in peoples diet in the past
five years. Grain, as the main food of most Chinese, is now playing a less important role. That is
to say, it had a slight decline from 49% in 1986 to 45% in 1990. On the contrary, the
proportion/percentage of some high-energy foods, such as milk and meat, increased 3% and 4%
respectively.
What has caused these changes? It seems to me that there are two reasons. First, with the
development of economy and society, people are better off than before. The price of meat and
milk is much higher than that of grain, so in the old days people could not afford them. Now they
have enough money to buy both meat and milk. Second, people nowadays pay more attention to
the elements of their diet. They look for a well-balanced diet that will be good for their health.
From what has been discussed/analyzed above, we may safely come to a conclusion that
there have been changes in peoples diet in the past five years because of financial and health
reasons, and there will be further changes in the foreseeable future.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic:
Student Use of Computers. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on
the chart and the outline given below:
1. Interpret the bar chart, and
2. State the reasons
3. Describe the problems of using the computers by college students.
Student Use of Computers
As is shown in the chart above, the average number of hours that college students spent on
computers per week increased sharply from 1990 to 2000. The first 5 years witnessed a steady
rise from less than 2 hours a week to almost 4 hours; while the number soared from 4 hours to 20
in the last 5 years.
As is shown in the chart above, great changes have taken place in students use of
computers between 1990 and 2000. On the one hand, the number of hours students spend on
PCs a week had a slight increase from less than 2 hours in 1990 to almost 4 hours in 1995. On
the other hand, it soared from 4 hours to around 18 hours a week in the last 5 years.
Why does the computer become so popular? There are several factors accounting for
this marked growth. For one thing, compared with any other human inventions and
innovations in history, computers, as the most powerful communication tool, can be widely used
in as many fields as one can imagine. For another, with the development of science and
technology, the price of computers becomes so low that almost everybody can afford one
nowadays, including us college students. Whats more, we cannot find a good job after
graduation without knowing how to use the high-tech machine.
Although computers bring us many benefits/much convenience, we cannot ignore the
fact that they also bring about/lead to/give rise to/cause many problems. For instance, some
students spent too much time on playing PC games and these, of course, affect their study
enormously. How to balance the time between using computers and studying has become a
serious problem. Therefore, it is high time that we learned not only how to use computers but
also how to use them properly/appropriately/wisely.

1997 年1 月Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes tow rite a composition on the
topic: Practice Makes Perfect. You should write at least 100 words and you should base your
composition on the outline below:
1. How to understand Practice Makes Perfect
2. Support the view with examples
3. Draw your own conclusion
Practice is the key to success in all fields of activity. It is practice alone that enables us
to build up speed and efficiency. When we accomplish something perfectly without wasting
effort, this is the result of long practice.
Examples can be easily found, but this/these will be enough/sufficient. Take the study of
English for example. Only practice can enable us to spell words correctly and master the
rules of grammar. And it is also through practice that we can become fluent in speaking and
writing, there is no other way. Another good example is sports. Practice is the only way to
become stronger and run faster. Besides, in team games practice is what improves our sense of
cooperation and helps the team to win.
To sum up, there can be no achievement which is not based on a solid foundation of
practice.
A famous/well-known proverb/saying/remark goes Practice makes perfect, which
means that perfection lies in practice. Without practice, you can never expect to be really good at
anything. On the contrary, the more you practice, the more likely you are to do things in a
perfect way.
Taking a look around, we can find examples too numerous to list. The study of English is
a case in point. If you wish to improve your pronunciation, you must practice pronouncing every
English syllable again and again. Likewise, if you want to write an excellent composition, you
have to sit down and write. Another example is Deng Yaping, the world No. 1 woman Ping-pong
player. This short girl, who does not seem to be cut out for sports, owes her success to painstaking
and perseverant practice.
In short, practice is essential if we want to make achievements in our studies or work, or
indeed in any other aspect of our life. Practice, to some degree, can make the difference
between being merely good at something and becoming a champion.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic: How
to get a job. You should write at least 100 words, and base your composition on the outline below:
1) Present situation: it is hard to get a job for college graduates
2) Give possible reasons
3) Your comments
Job hunting has always been a headache for college graduates. Though many graduates are
employed right after graduation, some are not. Most serious of all, some still have no idea where
to go working even a long time after graduation.
The reasons for this phenomenon are various. On the one hand, a few years ago colleges
and universities enrolled so many students in popular majors, such as economy, finance and so on
that the number of graduates was greater than the need in the market. On the other hand, most
graduates would rather stay in large cities without suitable job to do than go to the countryside.
I think the problem can be solved if both colleges and students take measures. First, they
should research the market and develop special skills to suit its need. Second, students attitude
towards employment should be changed. They should go to some small cities and country. There
they can also give full play to their professional knowledge. In a word, if we pay much attention,
the problem can be solved.

1999 年6 月Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the
topic: Reading Selectively Or Extensively? You should write at least 100 words, and base your
composition on the outline below:
1. Some people think we should read selectively
2. Others think we should read extensively
3. My opinion
It is widely believed that we are supposed to read selectively, which means that more often
than not, people choose some books to read. One reason they say is that with the development of
the publishing industry, books in increasing numbers are printed and eventually we cannot read
them all. The other reason they claim is that not all books are good for us, and some of them
may contain lots of pornographic or violent descriptions.
While others argue that it would be a better choice to read as many books as possible, that is,
we ought to read extensively. These people insist that only by reading a variety of books can one
become a full/knowledgeable man. They also point out that we need to read books of all kinds to
keep us well-informed and keep up with the latest development.
After careful consideration, I may safely come to the conclusion that we should combine
these two reading methods together. For one thing, we need to choose some classics to read. For
another, we have to read as much as we can. It is only by doing so that one can become a man
who knows something of everything and everything of something.

December 27, 2003
Dear Xiao Ming,
When it comes to which major you should choose, I propose that you apply for the
major/department of English. To begin with, English is the most popular language in the world,

8.记叙+说明
2003 年6 月Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write an eye-witness
account of a traffic accident. You should write at least 120 words, and based on the outline given
in Chinese below.
Suppose you saw a traffic accident, you need to write an eye-witness account for the police office.
The essay should be based on the outline below:
1.Time and place of the traffic accident
2.The details of the accident
3.Reasons for the traffic accident
It was at 6:30 in the early morning that I saw this terrible traffic accident. The tragedy just
happened near our school gate when I was on my way to the nearest Xinhua Bookstore to buy a
Contemporary Longman English-English Dictionary.
I heard a loud crash when I was walking on the sidewalk/pavement of the street. I turned
round and I found this horrible accident. With glass broken into pieces on the ground, two cars
were badly damaged and both of the drivers began to quarrel with each other, and people in
growing numbers were gathering together here. Predictably, a traffic jam is formed and policemen
are called and they came here immediately. And it took them about half an hour to get the traffic
on the move again.
It is no difficulty for me to come up with the following reasons to account for this
phenomenon. Firstly, both of them were driving too fast, and one of the drivers was driving
under the influence of alcohol. Secondly, the rainy weather should also be responsible for such a
horrible accident.
