Humans arrived in the Kaliko Islands about 7,000 years ago, and within 3,000 years most of the large mammal species that had lived in the forests of the Kaliko Islands had become extinct. Yet humans cannot have been a factor in the species extinctions, because there is no evidence that the humans had any significant contact with the mammals. Further, archaeologists have discovered numerous sites where the bones of fish had been discarded, but they found no such areas containing the bones of large mammals, so the humans cannot have hunted the mammals. Therefore, some climate change or other environmental factor must have caused the species extinctions.

The fact that no evidence showing significant contact between humans and the mammals has been found does not sufficiently prove that there was no any such contact at all.The argument treats a lack of proof that humans might be responsible for the extinctions as constituting sufficient proof that they were not.

Even if humans had no significant contact with mammals, human activities might cause negative effects on mammals in different ways, thus human activities might have caused the species extinctions indirectly.

The author fails to prove that those discovered sites were inhabited by humans.

The fact that no bones of large mammals were found at the sites does not sufficiently demonstrate that humans have not hunted those mammals.

The author ignores other factors besides climate change and environmental ones that could also explain the extinctions.
