北京在国内首次发布对于居民健康期望寿命的研究结果，也就是一个北京人在完全健康状态下生存的平均期望年数。测算结果显示，北京市18岁组人群健康期望寿命为40.17剩余年，男性为43.40剩余年，女性为38.06剩余年。这一结果意味着，一名18岁的北京人，预期可在健康状态下平均活到58岁以上。之后其生命可能会陷入疾病、残疾等非健康状态。
Healthy life expectancy is a relative statistic that estimates the average number of years that a person can expect to live in full health, on the basis of the current mortality rates and the prevalence of health conditions in the population.
“健康期望寿命”是一个相对数据，估算的是一个人在完全健康状态下生存的平均年数。这一数据是基于现在人口的死亡率和普遍的健康状况。
“健康期望寿命”的英文表达是healthy life expectancy，简称HLE。北京人的平均健康期望寿命为58.17岁，比大多数工业国家的平均水平少10年。
