When students read articles about scientific discovery, they learn what worked. Scientists show the methods that got the best result. They often show only the results that are significant and important. What they won't show are the mistakes or failures that came first. Yet sometimes those mistakes pointed the way to success.
It can take a long time and many experiments to achieve scientific success. Robbin, 16, and Annabelle, 15, learned that while working this summer in a lab. What's more, they learned that failure is not necessarily something to fear.
"I like the idea of scientific research," says Robbin. It's the basis for "every lesson you learn in school and understanding everything you see in life". This summer, Robbin has been working with Lauren, a chemistry student, who is making new drugs to fight harmful bacteria. At first, the tests made Robbin anxious. She worried that she might be making terrible mistakes. But Lauren said that finding out what doesn't work is "just part of the learning process". With time, the teenager got comfortable with the idea that every experiment wouldn't succeed.
Annabelle also learned a lot about failure and success. She worked with graduate student Agnieszka Gil. "Sometimes I try something and it takes a while for the experiment to run." This means that finding out whether Annabelle did something wrong can be a stressful waiting game, because "if you did something wrong you need to do it again". But she's now learning to be patient and not to expect instant success.
In science, getting to understand why something failed is on the road to success.
25. What impresses students most in articles about scientific discovery?
A. The reasons for success.
B. Scientists' achievements.
C. Stressful process of research.
D. The reason of mistakes.
26. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Lauren managed to make new drugs.
B. Robbin is a graduate student.
C. Agnieszka expected an instant success.
D. Annabelle learns the value of patience.
27. What did Robbin and Annabelle have in common in their experiments?
A. They realized not all experiments would succeed.
B. They did their experiments independently.
C. They made severe mistakes in the experiments.
D. They assisted graduate students to make new drugs.
28. What does the writer intend to tell us?
A. The importance of scientific discovery.
B. The reason of making errors in science.
C. The correct attitudes towards failures.
D. The importance of doing experiments.

China is facing a reading crisis, with more than 50% of people surveyed believing they don't spend enough time reading and only 20% satisfied with their reading time, China Daily said.
According to Xu Shengguo, head of the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication, the country's reading rate last year was 78.6%, which means that percentage of people read books, periodicals or newspapers or were involved in online reading, while 21.4% read nothing at all.
The academy started an yearly survey on the reading quantity of Chinese people in 2005 and found that each read 4.5 to 4.7 books on average per year between 2005 and 2017. Last year, Chinese people read only 4.56 books, compared with 12 in France, 11 in South Korea, 9 in Japan and about 7 in the United States. In addition, more than 40% of Chinese people read less than one book throughout the year outside of textbooks.
A training meeting on reading supported by Beijing Municipal Bureau of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television was held in Beijing last week. It was the first meeting for the Leading Reader project, a training series for teachers, officials, college students and bookstore owners to promote nationwide reading. It will be held on weekends during September and October.
In addition to factors such as the large population base in China and imbalance of regional economic development, the shortage of public libraries is widespread. Reading parties in the community are in need of greater promotion. If we want to promote the nationwide reading rate, we have to encourage more grassroots reading programs.
29. What is the reading rate of China last year?
A. 78.6%.
B. 20%.
C. 40%.
D. 21.4%.
30. What's the training meeting held last week for?
A. For supporting Beijing Municipal Bureau.
B. For promoting nationwide reading.

Babies may look helpless, but as soon as they come into the world, they're able to do many important things. They can recognize faces and moving objects, They' re attracted to language. And from very early on, they can differentiate their mother from other humans.
"They really come equipped to learn about the world in a way that was appreciated not until recently," says a scientist Sandra Aamodt. "It took scientists a long time to realize that their brains are doing some very difficult things."
Firstly, children have to learn how to talk.
Babies can differentiate new sounds from very early age, and there are ways for parents to help their children develop their language skills faster and more efficiently.
"The simplest way is to talk to your baby and around your baby a lot," says Aamodt. "And the other thing that parents can do is to respond when the baby speaks, Just act like some communication has happened--smile and give the baby a little pat--and that encourages the baby to continue to try to communicate."
But because language is so social, says MR. Wang, Aamodt’s workmate, passive exposure to words really doesn't help babies learn in any way.
"For example, videos that are often shown to babies containing language are not nearly so effective," he says.
"Language is acquired quite well before the age of 6, but trying to force your children to read before the age of 4 is an effort that doesn't work very well because the brain is not very well-equipped to tell the letter 'b' from the letter 'd' and so on," says Wang. "But it's something that older children can do without any effort at all."
"Kids learning two languages young are better able to learn different rules and to exchange rules that they've already learned," says Aamodt. "They have little difficulty choosing between conflicting possibilities."
32. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. People wanted to equip the brains of babies with some difficult things.
B. People didn't like to do research on babies' brain in the past.
C. Researchers didn't appreciate the learning ability of babies until recently.
D. It took scientist quite a long time to appreciate the structure of a baby's brain.
33. In which way can parents help their babies talk?
A. By smiling at and patting their babies frequently.
B. By communicating with their babies in an interactive way.
C. By exposing their babies to more TV programs and radio shows.
D. By whispering to their babies' ears from time to time.
34. Why does Wang mention the letters "b" and "d"?
A. Because he tries to show the view that children should learn knowledge according to their age levels.
B. Because he thinks children would have difficulty separating the two letters.
C. Because he supports the view that children can acquire to speak only at the age of three.
D. Because he thinks children have the ability to learn something in advance.
35. What was Aamodt's attitude towards learning two languages for children ?
A. approving
B. uncaring
C. unfriendly
D. doubtful
