  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

  A

My friend Robert started a new job this week and he’s been in the training class for two days. The employer has a very strict dress code—dark blue shirts and pants.

On the first day, an older gentleman in his class did not have the proper clothes and he was strictly told that he would be fired if he didn’t have the right clothes the next day. He explained, “Sir, I had not been told about this. Because of my larger size, it’s sometimes difficult to find the right clothing for a price I can afford.”

Last night, Robert and I decided that this old man shouldn’t lose the chance of work simply because he couldn’t afford the clothes. I had some cash on hand and Robert took it with him this morning just in case it was needed.

When training started this morning, the trainer was ready to fire the older gentleman. “You have 10 minutes to be in proper clothes,” he was told. At this point, Robert spoke up and asked if he could have 10 minutes to get him the clothes. He then ran out to the store and bought the proper-sized pants and a shirt; he returned with both and gave them to the older man.

The older gentleman began to cry and told him that he couldn’t accept such a gift from a stranger. Robert told him he had to because he had lost the receipt(收据) and couldn’t return them—a little white lie. The pants were a perfect fit, the shirt was a bit tight but he was able to keep his job.

“My wife and I tried to gather together some money last night, but we didn’t have enough to buy the clothes,” he told Robert. “It’s unbelievable to me that anybody would do such a thing for only knowing me a day!”

More unbelievable is how good it has made Robert and me feel to do this.

  56. If the older man did not have the proper clothes, he would _____.

  A. be punished

  B. be offered another job

  C. put off the training class

  D. lose his job

  57. The money which was paid for the clothes belonged to _____.

  58. How did Robert persuade the older man to accept the clothes?

  A. He told the older man that he would lose his job if he did not take them.

  B. He told a lie that the clothes didn’t fit himself.

  C. He told the older man that he could save money and return it later.

  D. He told the older man that he had no way to send them back.

  59. What might be the best title for the passage?

  A. Proper clothes for a stranger

  B. Fight against strict rules

  C. A strange employer

  D. An unbelievable thing

  B

Dr Gallaudet placed Douglas in the Kendall School, and he stayed there until he was old enough to work. He spent his life working in and around the halls of Gallaudet.

Once he courted (求爱) a black woman from Baltimore. Since his courtship required letter-writing, and he was illiterate, he had a student in the college act as his “private secretary”. Though that relationship did not work out, he did finally marry. Later, he married a black deaf woman from Washington D.C. The wedding and reception took place in a church near the college.

The happy couple went to Baltimore for a honeymoon, but the honeymoon only lasted for one day. Their plans were cut short when Douglas’s pocketbook containing about $300 was either lost or stolen.

Douglas never got very far from Washington D.C. and Gallaudet College was his world. He went to Norfolk, Virginia, once on a vacation, but he did not know what a vacation was. He spent the entire time working around the docks of Norfolk. He came home with a pocket of money, and told everyone that he had a fine vacation.

Traveling can be a fun way to gain life experiences, especially during Spring Break—a weeklong school vacation in the United States.

But what if you’re a student and don’t have enough money for a trip? Don’t worry.

  Here are some useful tips.

—Save: This probably is the most important preparation for traveling. Cut expenses(开支) to fatten your wallet so you’ll have more choices about where to go and how to get there.

—Plan ahead: Don’t wait until the last minute to plan your trip. Tickets may cost more when bought on short notice. Giving yourself several months to get ready can mean security(安全) and savings .

  — Do your homework: No matter where you go, research the places you will visit. Decide what to see. Travel books will provide information on the cheapest hotels and restaurants.

  — Plan sensibly: Write down what you expect to spend for food and hotels. Stick to your plan or you may not have enough money to cover everything.

  — Travel in groups: Find someone who is interested in visiting the same places. By traveling with others you can share costs and experiences.

  — Work as you go: Need more money to support your trip? Look for work in the places you visit.

  — Go off the beaten path: Tourist cities may be expensive. You may want to rethink your trip and go to a lesser-known area. Smaller towns can have many interesting activities and sights.

  — Pack necessary things: The most important things to take are not always clothes. Remember medicine in case you get sick and snacks in case you can’t find a cheap restaurant.

  — Use the Internet: The Net can help to save money. Some useful websites include www. Travelocity. com, www. bargains-lowest fare. com and www. Economy travel. com.

By planning sensibly, even students can enjoy the travel. Your travel experiences will be remembered for a lifetime.

  第二节:(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

  根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

  NOISE

The people who lived in Rome 2,000 years ago were already talking about the noise in their city. They couldn’t sleep, they said, with all the people and carriages in the streets. For them noise was only a trouble, but for us it has become a real danger. We know that sounds of an ordinary city are loud enough to cause serious harm to the people's hearing--in the United States, one person out of twenty has suffered some hearing loss.

  71

It has increased greatly in the 20th century with the development of machines. We live surrounded by loud planes, trucks, buses, radios, machines–that make such loud noises day and night up to 90 or 100 decibels(分贝). A usual talk reaches 55 decibels. A jet plane goes to 100 decibels and more.“Pop”music reaches around 118 decibels. At 120 decibels the ear stops hearing sound, and the ear suffers a lot.

However, the human ear does not judge clearly the degree of loudness of a noise.A sound ten decibels louder than another one is felt as twice as loud, when, in fact, it is ten times louder.

  72

But it is not only our hearing that is harmed. It has been known that loud noises, over a period of time, cause loss of sleep, anger, and many other problems.

  73

Can anything be done to make our world more quiet? We know how to build quieter machines,if the public wants them. But shop assistants say that people who buy motorbikes like the loudest ones because they sound more loudly.

  74

In America the drivers in some cities are fined(罚款)fifty dollars for honking(打喇叭); they may lose their right to drive if they do it again.People who carry noisy radios in public places may lose them if they are caught with them.

  75

Even so, say the scientists, in twenty years the cities will be twice as loud as they are today because of the increase of the population.People will have to shout to be heard at the dinner table. Unless, of course, they have all become completely deaf!

A.Some countries are trying to make laws.

B.People will become completely deaf in the future.

C.When a sound is getting louder and louder, our ears are in danger.

D.In fact, it will take everybody’s hard work to keep city noises from increasing.

E.Since we cannot measure the increase or decrease of noise, we never know in what danger we are.

F.And all over the world the situation is getting worse all the time since noise increases with the population.

G.Such problems have been found among factory workers, and people who operate loud machines, or often go to pop music concerts.
