Module2 Highlights of My Senior Year

  A

New Zealand has long been mountain bike mad.Over the last 25 years an increasing number of dedicated (专用的) cycle tracks and parks have sprung up in both town and country, many developed by bike clubs and other community groups.

Recreational cycling was already on a roll, when in 2009 a 50 million New Zealand dollar government fund was established to create a continuous touring route running the length of the country, supported at a grass roots level by an additional 50 million New Zealand dollars offered up by councils and local organizations.

It soon became apparent, however, that building one continuous route across the two islands was not only too ambitious, but it also would bypass many of the most remote and interesting corners of the country. Restoring and extending historic pathways made more sense, enabling cyclists to visit fascinating historic and cultural sites while seeing natural wonders along the way,and inspiring both locals and people from overseas to ride them.

The first sod(草皮) of the new trails was turned by Prime Minister John Key in late 2009.Since then, armed with machetes, shovels and diggers, some of the world's best single-track designers and builders have bushbashed, benched, sidled and switch-backed their way through a diverse range of terrain(地形).

By the end of 2017,10 of the 20 trails were open to riders, with the remainder scheduled for completion by the end of 2017.The 2,340 km network will be even further extended by already-established trails, such as the famous 71 km Queen Charlotte Track that goes through the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island.

1.Restoring and extending historic pathways would

  ________.

A.work natural wonders along the historic pathways

B.allow cyclists to enjoy local history and culture

C.discourage locals and foreigners from riding them

D.avoid all remote and interesting corners of the country

依据文章第三段中的“Restoring and extending historic pathways made more sense...along the way”可知,选B项。

2.Who first started the building work of the new trails?

  A.Prime Minister John Key.

  B.Locals and people from overseas.

  C.Some of the single-track designers.

D.Bike clubs and other community groups.

解析:选A。 依据文章第四段中的“The first sod(草皮)of the new trails was turned by Prime Minister John Key in late 2009.”

3.What can be the best title for the text?

  A.Mountain Bike Holiday

  B.Recreational Cycling

C.New Cycle Trails for Easy Riding

  D.Queen Charlotte Track

  B

People think what I do is so wonderful because I interview stars. And I have to admit that when I first started working at Sassy in 1987,I was excited about that part of my job for the first couple of months, anyway. Then I noticed how stars would fool me for months.I could never get enough time with a star to find out anything interesting, and some acted just simply rudely.I started hating the way I was treated, and I was really disappointed to see that these people I had worshipped(崇拜) before were pretty ordinary. So I decided I would just tell the truth instead of keeping up their myths(不真实的事).If the star was a bad guy,I would say so.If I thought someone was stupid,I did not hold back that information.

I thought readers would appreciate that kind of honesty.Surprisingly, many of them hated me for it.I have gotten so many attacks on my character. In their eyes, being famous is everything, even more desirable than being truly creative and talented.

Why do we need stars? In fact, the media created stars to satisfy our basic need for gossip(闲话).Over time, talking about people we have never met and we are never likely to meet has become what we are crazy about. Thus, some people are more interested in the personal lives of stars than in the lives of their own family and friends. That is why it is so ridiculous when a star wants to discuss only his or her work in an interview as we care. We want the dirt in their personal lives.

There is another reason why we worship stars. As a whole, our society is not as religious as it once was.It seems that people need something to fulfill them in the way religion once did.Star worship exists as an unfulfilling desire for true heroes.

We make them stars, but then their reputation makes us feel unimportant, and we truly feel better about ourselves when they die.I am part of this whole process. No wonder I feel soiled at the end of workdays.

4.What are stars like according to the author?

  A.They always treat others rudely.

B.They always talk about something dull.

  C.They are actually ordinary people.

D.They are usually honest and polite.

根据第一段第五句中的“...I was really disappointed to see that these people I had worshipped(崇拜)before were pretty ordinary.”

  5.We worship stars because________.

A.we need true mental heroes to support us

B.we can learn something useful from them

C.we concern about their family and friends

D.we like talking about their dressing styles

解析:选A。 根据倒数第二段的最后两句“It seems that people need something to fulfill them in the way religion once did.Star worship exists as an unfulfilling desire for true heroes.”

6.When the author is writing this article, his tone sounds________.

  A.excitedB.angry

  C.worried

  D.calm

7.What is the main purpose of the author in writing the passage?

A.To show the disadvantages of working with stars.

B.To remind us not to worship stars blindly.

C.To laugh at the stars he has interviewed.

D.To talk about the reasons why we worship stars.
