英语思维模式中占据主导地位的是直线型思维方式，这种方式起源于柏拉图和亚里士多德以及古希腊的演说历史文化。这种思维方式要求文章开宗明义第一句话就概括出主题思想，然后再引出具体事例来发展思路，真正做到环环相扣，最后结尾处总结全文。形式上表现为：主题句发展句结尾句。而且英语中起连接过渡作用的词语特别多，而且这些词语出现的频率相当高，所以整篇文章的结构层次特别清晰。中国人的思维方式属螺旋型，因此写作时倾向于先围绕主题外围阐述评论，然后以反复而又发展的螺旋型形式对主题展开论述。这种方式强调思维的连贯，因此很多情况下并不需要用过渡词语来表现，所以中国学生很少注意过渡词语的运用，结果写出的语段缺乏连贯性。
