(Text 1)
M: What a pity you cant join us for dinner this weekend.
W: I wish I could, but I have a birthday party for my son. Would you like to join us?
(Text 2)
M: I am traveling to London on Flight Boeing 747. Do I check in here?
W: Thats right. Can I see your ticket and passport, please?
(Text 3)
M: This school is lucky to have a teacher as good as Mr. White.
W: Hes one in a million.
(Text 4)
M: Please change this into three 20 dollars and four 10 dollars.
W: Sure. Twenty, forty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, one hundred. Here you are, sir.
M: Thank you so much.
(Text 5)
M: Tom is certainly easy going.
W: Yes, the exact opposite of his brother.
(Text 6)
W: What do you usually have for breakfast?
M: I like a big breakfast. I have two eggs, some cakes, and a cup of coffee, how about you?
W: Oh. I prefer a light one, just some tea and rolls. Where do you have your lunch?
M: At bars. I often have some sandwiches and a little ice cream.
W: You have dinners in the restaurant, dont you?
M: Yes, but not very often.
W: What do you have when you have dinners in the restaurant?
M: I often have some soup to start with for my main course, I prefer beef and chicken.
W: That must be very expensive.
M: Oh! Yes, it is, but the food there is excellent.
(Text 7)
M: Where were you yesterday, Mary?
W: I was at home asleep.
M: Asleep! I thought that you had to take an exam.
W: I was sick. I had a fever. I couldnt get out of bed.
M: You still look a little sick. You ought to go back to bed.
W: I m going now. I just came here to speak to my professor.
M: What did he tell you?
W: He said that Id be able to take a make-up exam.
M: Well, thats all right then. Are you going straight home?
W: I have to stop at the drugstore on the way. I need more aspirin.
M: Do you think that you should walk that far?
W: I have to walk. I didnt bring my car. I didnt think Id be able to drive today.
M: Well, take care of yourself.
W: OK. Thanks.
(Text 8)
W: Robert, you play guitar, dont you?
M: I used to. But I havent played it in quite some time. I dont really have time these days with all my studies. Why do you ask?
W: Im trying to organize a group to play at some parties and weddings on the weekend. We still need a guitar player.
M: Well, I dont know. But your idea sounds fun to me.
W: Oh, it will be. Im more or less in charge of things, so if you want to give it a try, youre in. Its as easy as that. Besides. its a great chance to get out and meet people.
M: But I told you I havent practised for a long time. I dont know if I remember any of the songs I used to play. Even if I did remember the old songs, I still probably dont know the songs you are going to want me to play.
W: Dont worry about it. I just thought Id ask you to try and join us sometime when we were practising. Well be practising for a few months before we give performances. And even if we do start playing concerts, it wont be that serious.
M: Ill tell you what. Ill get my guitar out tonight and see how it goes. It sounds pretty exciting, but I will really have to practise to get it right.
(Text 9)
M: Could I speak to you for a few minutes, Mrs. Sherwood?
W: Yes, go ahead; Jerry.
M: Well, my wife is iii and she has to go to hospital tomorrow.
W: I am sorry to bear that. Is it serious?
M: The doctors say it is not very serious. But we have a baby, you know.
W: Yes. He is lovely.
M: Thank you. But I have to take care of the baby when my wife is in hospital.
W: I see. You want a few days off, right?
M: Yes. Thats it.
W: How long do you need?
M: My wife will be out of hospital by next Thursday. So I can be back on Friday.
W: Well, youd better stay at home on Friday as well. Your wife needs rest. Come on Monday.
M: Thats most kind of you, Mrs. Sherwood.
W: Dont mention it.
