　　Compassion（同情心） may be the queen（女王） of American virtues（道德）. The story of The Good Samaritan from the Bible describes a man who showed compassion. On his way to a certain city, a Samaritan man found a poor traveler lying on the road. The traveler had been beaten and robbed（抢劫）. The kind Samaritan, instead of just passing by, stopped to help this person in need.

　　Another virtue Americans respect is perseverance（坚持不懈）. Remember Aesops fable about the turtle（海龟） and the rabbit that had a race（赛跑）? The rabbit thought he could win easily, so he took a nap（打盹）. But the turtle finally won because he did not give up. Another story tells of a little train that had to climb a steep（陡峭的） hill. The hill was so steep that the little train had a hard time trying to get over it. But the train just kept pulling, all the while saying, I think I can, I think I can. At last, the train was over the top of the hill. I thought I could, I thought I could, chugged（发出轧轧声前进） the happy little train.

　　同情心，可能是美国的道德之最了。（may be the queen of American virtues）圣经（the Bible）中的好撒玛利亚人的故事，描述一个流露同情心的人。在这个撒玛利亚人出发去某城市的途中，看到一个可怜的旅客躺在路旁。（found a poor traveler lying on the road）这旅客被鞭打、抢劫。（had been beaten and robbed）这位仁慈的撒玛利亚人没有视而不见，（instead of just passing by）而是停下来帮助这位处于困境中的人。（stopped to help this person in need）

　　因为传说，Good Samaritan就成了专有名词，用来指乐善好施的人。

　　另外一个为美国人所尊崇的美德为坚忍。（perseverance）记得再龟兔赛跑这则伊索寓言（Aesops fable）吗？兔子以为牠可以赢的很轻松，便睡了个午觉，（took a nap）但是乌龟再最后终因不放弃而赢了这场比赛。另一个故事谈到一个必须爬过陡峭山头（a steep hill）的小火车，山头是这么陡，以至于小火车很难爬上去，（to get over it）但是它仍不断地爬，（the train just kept pulling）并不停地（all the while）说：我想我能做到，（I think I can）我能做到。最后，火车终于爬过了山头，我就知道我可以。（I thought I could）这个快乐的小火车继续往前去。

　　while的意思是一会儿，一段时间，在表示做事频率时，人们经常使用它。今天的句型，就和while有关。先来看看两个常用短语，你能看出它们的区别吗？

　　all the while 始终；一直。once in a while 偶尔。

　　all the while表示动作一直延续下去，始终如一。比如一个人劝朋友参加聚会，向他描述当天将会出现的场面，就是这么说的：

　　All the while were drinking pints of the stuff！Thatd be grand！

　　我们可以一直开怀畅饮！那太棒了！

　　once in a while有occasionally的意思，表示动作或事情发生是不连续的，时间间隔很长。比如：

　　It snows here once in a while.

　　这儿偶尔会下雪。

　　need是什么意思？80%的人，第一反应就是太简单了吧，不就是需要的意思？其实，这个小词变化多端，一不留神可能就会上了它的当。今天，我们就来深入了解一下need的含义和用法。

　　为了证实我刚才的话，先来看两个例子：

　　The pen needs mending．

　　这支钢笔需要修理。

　　She need not come to school at present．

　　她现在不必来学校。

　　以上两句话中，有没有错误？答案是，没有！它们都是正确的，只是need的意义不同。第一句，need是普通动词需要，第二句，need是情态动词，相当于must，没有三态变化。怎么区分呢？一是靠语感，另外，当need当作情态动词时，只能用于否定句或疑问句中，如果句子是肯定句，那么，其中的need一定不是情态动词。

　　当need not之后接完成体的不定式时，表示已做了原来无需做的行为之意。因此，现在我们可以正确区分下列两句的不同涵义：

　　He didnt need to come to school．

　　他不需要来学校。（他没来。）

　　He need not have come to school．

　　他本来无需到学校来。（他来了。）

　　我们都很熟悉的一条谚语说：

　　A friend in need is a friend indeed.

　　患难见真情。

　　一开始，我理解in need就是在需要之中，后来才发现，原来in need是个固定短语，意思是穷困之时，困难之境，英文解释就是：lacking in something; requiring help.在今天的短文中，也出现了这个字眼，大家发现了吗？
