　　　　关于盐的短语，稍一拾掇就能罗列一大串，如：说你加深我的痛苦最常用Youve rubbed salt in my wounds（你在我伤口上撒了把盐），邀请贵宾坐上席可以说Please sit above the salt（请上座）今天谈的the salt of the earth（精英）源于《圣经》。

　　　　据《新约马太福音》记载：耶稣对他的门徒说：Ye are the salt of the earth：but if the salt have lost its savor，wherewith shall it be salted？（你们是世上的盐，盐若失了味，如何才能再咸呢？）

　　　　在这里，salt转义为elite of the world（中坚力量，精英，高尚的人）。这是耶稣在福音结尾时所说的话，既然他把门徒比做世上的盐，足见此种称赞高乎寻常。

　　　　其实，盐自古代就很贵重，并被认为是尊贵的象征罗马士兵有专门用来买盐的salary（津贴）；伊丽莎白时代，王公贵族们的餐桌上都摆着一个很大的盐罐，贵宾坐在盐罐的上首，正因此才有短语Please sit above the salt（请上座）。
