Greece struck an outline deal with creditors on theterms of a proposed 86bn rescue package, markinga breakthrough before an August 20 deadline forits next debt repayment.

Negotiators have agreed sharply reduced fiscal targets to reflect Greece’s worsening economicsituation . The outline deal calls for a 0.5 per cent primary budget deficit — before debtpayments — instead of the primary surplus of 3 per cent of national output forecast in thecurrent budget, the officials said. The primary surplus forecasts for 2016 and 2017 are alsolower, at 0.5 per cent and 1.75 per cent instead of 4.5 per cent.

Athens is due to makea 3.2bn debt repayment to the ECB on August 20.
