1. Be prepared.

Don't go into the review expecting your manager to lay out everything for you. Have a list of things you want to talk about, anticipate what specific aspects of your job will be a topic of conversation, and prepare answers to any potentially tough questions you think may come your way. But be confident about the things you have done and be able to explain why and how you did them.

2. Find out about the process.

Workplaces do performance reviews differently. Some require that you assess yourself and then use that as the basis for the review. Some focus more on the past than the future, or vice versa. Ask your boss before the review for some specifics on how it works or talk to some of your co-workers if you feel comfortable doing so. The more you know about how your workplace handles reviews, the better prepared you can be.

3. Start a work journal.

Every day, document each major task you do, why it is valuable, and anything you learned along the way to completion. Keeping track of the work you have done will help you outline what you have accomplished, and keeping track of how you did it will help remind you of what worked and what didn't, which can help you down the road.

4. Assess yourself.

Before your boss gives an evaluation of your performance, evaluate yourself. Think about what you did well, what you could have done better, and how you would judge yourself if you were in your boss's shoes. Some online tools can help you in this process.

5. Reflect on your work attitude.

Things like taking on extra tasks without complaint, putting in overtime when not asked, working to solve job-related disagreements, making your voice heard in a respectful way -- these things can help show that you have value beyond the nuts and bolts of daily tasks.

6. Highlight last year's accomplishments.

Your boss is probably only peripherally aware of all the things you have done in the past year. Now is the time to point out all your achievements that you think are worthy of attention. Make sure to bring up anything that you think went above and beyond what was expected of you.

7. Ask questions.

By asking questions, you not only show your boss that you are engaged and interested in getting better, but you can also get clarification on things you're unsure about, have a better idea of what your boss expects of you, and avoid misunderstandings.

8. Be specific wherever possible

Giving generic, general responses doesn't really impress. Facts give you credibility, and help the boss see that you know what you're talking about.

9. Show your problem-solving skills.

If a problem is presented during your meeting, work on finding a solution. Listen actively, share your ideas on how the problem can be resolved, and offer to help.
