The Application And Background Check
Debra Davenport (Executive Professional Mentor, Licensed Career Counselor & Employment Agent) gives expert video advice on: Can I leave out a past job that I didn't like or that ended badly? and more...
What is a "job application"?
With regards to the application and background check, a job application is either a printed or online form that perspective employers will ask you to complete giving basic information. The job application information will include your contact information, social security number, work history, references, and experience.
What do I put on my application if I have a criminal record?
If you have a criminal record, the best thing to do is to be honest about it. Just be forth coming and upfront, and let the employer know truthfully what happened. Answer the questions that are going to be on the application fully and completely, and then you can always discuss those answers in the interview once you get in to meet with someone.
Should I reveal my disability or past injuries on my application?
With regards to the application and background check, the job application may ask you about past injuries or any type of disability claims you may have filed in the past. If so, be honest about your responses, and certainly forthcoming in your answers. You should know that it goes against the law for any employer to discriminate against you if you have had any previous injuries or disability claims.
Can I leave out a past job that I didn't like or that ended badly?
If you've had a position in your professional background that ended badly or you did not care for, and it's a significant part of your professional experience, it would behoove you to leave that position on your resume. You know, nobody ever completely burns bridges unless they try, so if you've left a position on not so greatest terms, you can certainly go back to that employer and see if you can repair the damage. See if you might still be able to get a good recommendation or reference from that employer so that you're completly comfortable leaving that position on your resume, and also completely comfortable talking about the position in an interview.
What is a "background check"?
A background check is required by some employers, not all, and typically includes a criminal background check, to see if you've got into any trouble with the law; it will also frequently include a consumer credit check; it may include fingerprinting, it also may include a complete reference check from previous employers. Basically, if you give a prospective employer permission to do a complete background check, you are giving them the OK to go back as far as they would like to go and to contact anyone who may know or have known you in the past.
