MUSCAT, Feb. 11 -- Oman Sail Tuesday revealed that the Sultanate has won the bid to host the World Sailing Championships for three Olympic classes - 49er, 49erFX and Nacra - in 2021.
The event will be organized in the Sports City at Al Mussanah - 100 km south of the capital, Muscat.
"Winning the bid to organize the world championship comes to complement the efforts aimed at enhancing the Sultanate's position in the sailing sport map by hosting international championships, and efforts related to the representation of the Sultanate to win medals through national teams and junior teams," read a statement by Oman Sail.
Oman Sail CEO David Graham said: "The Sultanate's acquisition of the hosting file despite the great competition is evidence of the efficiency of the facilities and capabilities of Al Mussana Sports City, which previously hosted many international championships."
"Oman has an impressive history of hosting international sailing events, including 2008 Asian Beach Games Championship, 2013 Laser World Championships, RSX Skateboarding Championships 2017, Laser Radial Championship 2017, and the IODA Asian and Oceanian Championships in 2019," Graham added.
The president of the Asian Sailing Federation, Malav Shroff, said: "During my presence in the Sultanate during the organization of the IODA Asian and Oceanian Championships I witnessed the details of hard work to receive more than 200 participants in the race and the efficiency of Al Mussana Sports City that meets the needs of sailors to practice this sport and compete at the highest levels."
