BERLIN, Oct. 30 -- Leipzig progressed into the round of the last sixteen after scoring three goals within six minutes to eliminate Wolfsburg 6-1 while Borussia Dortmund bounced back to knockout Borussia Monchengladbach on Julian Brandt's brace in the German Cup on Wednesday.
Wolfsburg suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat and crashed out of the second round as Leipzig marked five second-half goals to book their ticket for the next round.
Leipzig started highly motivated on the road and assumed control from the kick off. It took the visitors thus only 13 minutes to break the deadlock as Wolfsburg's Jeffrey Bruma deflected the ball into the wrong goal.
The "Bulls" continued to pose more threat as Wolfsburg lacked in penetration and were unable to test goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo in the first half.
The "Wolves" grabbed a better start into the second half though and produced their first clear-cut opportunity when Stefan Ilsanker had to block Josip Brekalo's dangerous effort on target in the 46th minute.
However, it were the visitors who scored the goals as Marcel Sabitzer exchanged passes with Timo Werner before slotting home from five meters to double the lead in the 55th minute.
Leipzig gained momentum and tripled their advantage only three minutes later as Werner's square pass following a fast break allowed Emil Forsberg to tap home from close range.
Wolfsburg were unable to put up resistance and conceded the fourth goal when Konrad Laimer made no mistake to beat custodian Pavao Pervan in a one-on-one at the hour mark.
Werner got his name on the scoreboards as well, as the German international had all time and space to make it 5-0 with 68 minutes played.
Leipzig were not done with the scoring as Werner wrapped up his brace in the 88th minute before Wolfsburg were able to score their consolation through Wout Weghorst moments later.
Borussia Dortmund booked their berth for the last 16 as well as Brandt's brace cancelled out Marcus Thuram's opener for Monchengladbach.
The "BVB" came off with a better start in front of home crowd but still they needed 29 minutes to get their first promising chance on target as Thorgan Hazard rattled the woodwork from the edge of the box.
Monchengladbach grew into the game and created their first chance in the 38th minute when Dortmund goalkeeper Marwin Hitz had to defuse Thuram's effort from six meters.
After the restart, both sides needed some time to gain a foothold into the game hence goalscoring opportunities were at premium in the opening stages of the second half.
The game came suddenly to life in the 71st minute when Oscar Wendt's cross met Thuram, who nodded home from central position from inside the box.
Dortmund remained unimpressed and responded well as Brandt's deflected shot found the back of the net to level the scores six minutes later.
Brandt remained in the thick of things and shocked the visitors with his second goal in the 80th minute after heading home from eight meters into the top left corner to seal the deal.
Elsewhere, Werder Bremen advanced into the next round after cruising 4-1 past second division side Heidenheim.
Fortuna Dusseldorf came from behind and beat second division club Erzgebirge Aue on Kasim Adams' 2-1 decider.
Hertha Berlin needed the penalty shootout to overpower resilient second tier team Dynamo Dresden 5-4 on penalties and Eintracht Frankfurt edged lower league side St. Pauli.
