BERLIN, May 8 -- Hertha Berlin midfielder Mitchell Weiser has joined league rivals Bayer Leverkusen for the upcoming season, both Bundesliga sides confirmed in an official statement on Tuesday.

The Werkself have reinforced their squad with the signing of Mitchell Weiser, who has inked a five-year deal, which will keep him with Bayer Leverkusen until June 2023. The new arrival received jersey number 23.

"He has proven in recent years what a great talent he is. We also see that he has not exhausted his potential yet. Mitchell has all the prerequisites to become an absolute top player here in the years to come," Leverkusen's sporting director Rudi Voeller said.

Despite his young age at 23 years, Mitchell Weiser is an experienced Bundesliga player, who made his breakthrough as a youngster at Bayern Munich in 2013 where he provided one goal and four assists in 16 competitive appearances.

In the summer 2017, Weiser agreed on a transfer to Hertha Berlin. He played 70 league games, scored five goals and provided 11 assists. After three years at Hertha, the midfielder opted for a new task at Leverkusen.

"Bayer Leverkusen is a great team whose games I love to watch. They play attractive, aggressive and fast-paced football. I am very much looking forward to being part of this team in the coming years," Weiser said.

The Werkself currently sit in 5th place of the standings and are eyeing for a berth in the UEFA Champions League. They will encounter newly-promoted Hannover at the closing round of the Bundesliga 2017-2018 season on Saturday.?
