President Barack Obama paid a historic visit to Myanmar yesterday, saying that the political changes afoot in the country were irreversible as its people could finally see and taste freedom after five decades of dictatorship.
“Something is happening in this country that cannot be reversed, Mr Obama said on the first visit to the country by a US president.
He also told an audience at Yangon university that Myanmar’s military must accept restraints on its power, noting that “the US has the strongest military in the world, but it must submit to civilian control.
Mr Obama’s visit came just two weeks after his re-election to a second term in office, during which the president intends to continue his administration’s “pivot of diplomatic and military resources towards the Asia Pacific region. Resource-rich Myanmar has been a traditional ally of China, which is wary of Washington’s renewed focus on its backyard.
Mr Obama met Thein Sein, the president who has propelled Myanmar’s transformation, and Aung San Suu Kyi, the opposition leader who is now a member of parliament. The streets outside Ms Suu Kyi’s house and those leading to the university were lined with people, many waving makeshift American flags.
Some human rights groups said that the visit was too early, although many were thankful that he didn’t visit Naypyidaw, the former military government’s showcase capital.
Yangon university, the scene of repeated violent assaults on students by the military, had been hurriedly spruced up for the speech. “This is where hundreds of students were killed, said Aung Zaw, editor of the online Irrawaddy journal, adding that the president’s visit could help rejuvenate a once-great institution.
Mr Obama devoted part of his speech to Myanmar’s festering ethnic conflicts, including a continued war in the northern Kachin state and an upsurge in communal violence against Muslim Rohingya in western Rakhine state.
Addressing widespread prejudice against the Rohingya, he called on all communities to stop “incitement to violence after recent incidents in which 170 Rohingya were killed and more than 100,000 displaced
