Fears over the economy and unemployment were the central focus of voters who cast ballots in the presidential election Tuesday, with issues such as health care, the federal budget deficit and foreign policy rated far lower in importance.

Exit polls showed that many voters see Mitt Romney as better positioned to fix the economy and President Barack Obama as having a better feel for the middle class and how to handle Medicare.

The voter impressions come from a national survey of voters, conducted on behalf of media organizations, at polling stations across the country, as well as voters who cast ballots before Election Day and who were interviewed by phone.

The results mostly tracked the candidates' respective strengths and merits that numerous national polls have shown for weeks.

Voters viewed Mr. Obama in a generally positive light, the preliminary data showed. More than half approved of his job performance as president, and more than half had a favorable view of Mr. Obama himself.

By contrast, just under half of voters said they had an unfavorable view of Mr. Romney, slightly more than had a favorable one.

With the race certain to pivot on who wins a handful of key states, the early polls of voters in Ohio, Virginia and Florida found views at variance with the national trends and with one another. In Florida, for instance, a higher portion of voters gave Mr. Romney the best marks for handling the economy, while in Ohio the two were essentially even.

More voters in Ohio said Mr. Romney's policies would benefit the rich than said that nationally.

In Ohio, the only state where the question was asked, Mr. Obama got high marks for the bailout of the U.S. auto industry, with nearly six in 10 voters there approving of that action, even though just one in 10 said they had a member of their household that worked in the auto industry.

According to preliminary data from the survey, large pluralities nationwide approved of some of Mr. Obama's campaign pitches, such as his push to raise taxes on those earning more than $250,000 a year.

A majority said that most illegal immigrants working in the U.S. should be offered a chance to apply for legal status, a position held by many Democrats.

But about half supported repealing all or part of the federal health-care overhaul that has come to be known as Obamacare, the president's chief policy achievement, the repeal of which is one of Mr. Romney's top campaign pledges.

And, according to preliminary data, a majority agreed with the statement that the government is doing too many things better left to businesses and individuals─a point of view often articulated by Mr. Romney─rather than with the idea that the government should do more to solve problems, a point of view more in keeping with Mr. Obama's platform.
